Tractors running on red were stopped from towing cars out of muddy carparks at the Yorkshire show - until the tanks were drained and refilled with derv.

gritting lorries can run on red , but must not be used for any other purpose At work

Older diesels will indeed run on cooking oil (though it can be hard to get the car started). Long threads on this on some of the forums, and to do it properly you should fit a pre-heater kit. Don't try it on a Fr2 or anything else with a common rail engine. Lots of bio-diesel made from recycled cooking oil around - used to run my TD5 on a 50/50 mix - but although if it's done properly it's pure bio-diesel it would still be dodgy to use it in a FR2 when LR specifically say don't.
People largely stopped using supermarket cooking oil when it became as expensive as normal diesel. Also some of it contains anti-foaming agents which are bad for the system. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

I used to run a Toyota Estima people carrier (Japanese import) on 70/30 veg oil /diesel mix. 2.2 Turbo diesel. Ran fine, although smelt like a burger van. Had some funny looks filling up with bottles of oil from Lidl. Only 80p /Ltd though.

Wouldn't try in freely though Wink Andy

Since December I've been using tesco & averaged about 38mpg on a daily commute of 40 miles using main roads & country lanes, I work for a fuel oil distributor who uses Texaco branded fuels, all the boys say they wouldn't touch supermarket fuel & use the derv pump on the yard, I've been told I will see better mpg using it & go further on a tank, my last full tank got me 563 miles on the trip computer , tank was on fumes yesterday , I brimmed it with the Texaco fuel 75 litres, reset all the computers so will now see what the difference is , at the moment after about 85 miles I'm showing 33mpg .....

I agree totally. I spent time with a large oil & Fuel research company seeing all the different oils and fuels tested. enough said for me.
I also see what happens too fuel tanks and EGr valves & throttle bodies and injectors that run on supermarket fuel.
always worth a visit to a diesel specialist where they are repairing diesels all day long and have actually had to invest large money to have fuel testing facilities to actually test diesel fuel. they will advise you on their findings.
The results you may find shocking !

For me BP/ Shell or texaco, even when Im abroad.
If I have ever had to succumb to a tank of cheaper diesel the MPG drops and the engine oil discolours quicker. Jaguar x-type sport gone

I used Sainsburys fuel for years, as it was believed that BP were their suppliers. Shortly after the 'secret' contract with BP expired, I started to notice a deterioration in both performance and economy in both of our vehicles.

Once I moved to the local BP garage, normal service was quickly resumed. Which improved even further when I started using BP ultimate.

Since I've been using the fuel from the pump at work I'm now averaging 41mpg with no other kids or adjustments, my driving style hasn't changed, be interesting to see if this goes up or down with new tyres being fitted this week ...

All UK fuels are within the same specifications, the only differences are the additives added by the driver of the tanker, which will be 1 in X thousand. The FL2 is able to take a higher concentration of bio fuel than most models but that is not relevant to UK brands. Sorry, but you are wrong on this. Different fuels are refined in different parts of the world, and although they meet British standards, they are not all the same. Drivers do not add anything.

Supermarket diesel and unleaded is the lowest grades acceptable for British standards. V-Power and BP Ultimate type fuels are significantly higher in grade and quality. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. They never used BP fuels. BP were the distributors and not the suppliers. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

I avoid supermarket diesel at all costs. It really isn't good fuel.

I have never had an EGR fault or any other fuel system fault between 2 Freelander 2's and 80000 miles.

Always used V-Power or BP Ultimate.

I can't prove what I'm writing here but since you can get Tesco Clubcard points at ESSO stations I reckon ESSO might supply Tesco stations.
I have run all my vehicles, petrol & Diesel, on Tesco stuff for years without any problems.

I'll also put this into play; all vehicles designed and built for sale around the world would be so designed to run on the crap that you get "all around the world". No? MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Could you elaborate on the "British standard girl" Laughing

I swear the enhanced diesel products are better, I also use another 'substance', but we won't dwell on that here.
Both my cars have been serviced regularly at a LR dealer and the service department have commented on how 'quick' the cars feel, throttle response and power delivery is far better than the loan cars I have had.

Having a few customers in Oil + Gas, the majority of them tell me that the base fuel is EXACTLY the same for every supplier, but with different levels of additives.

In fact, one of them has a Disco 3 with 235k miles, it has run on supermarket (or the cheapest) fuel available, and it is one of the smoothest sounding D3's I have ever heard. Even plugging it in, and checking the injector fuelling values confirms it is running very, very well Thumbs Up

Me, I run Shell/BP where possible, with a dose of 2 stroke every tank Thumbs Up
