Tooth Extraction........ouch !!

unfortunately I had to have a tooth removed today as it was cracked below the gumline.

strange thing was when I asked the dentist if I could keep it she said no, as it is against regulations ?

she said it was classed as body tissue ?

anyone heard of this before ?

Iain

Had a bloke that squashed his little finger working on a car. That had to be removed. He wanted it back to dry it out and put on a necklace but he got the same answer as you.

We've still got our two childrens dried up umbilical cords and first teeth somewhere in the memories box. Whistle

There is a shortage of extracted teeth in the UK, many dentists and dental schools have to buy them in for use in training etc, I have seen many of these teeth, some still with bone attached where they have been hacked from cadavers. Shocked it may be the case that she is keeping them for practicing on.

As far as I know there are no regulations preventing the dentist from giving you the tooth and I know some dental practices have put teeth through the autoclave device to be on the safe side.

I can ask the question tomorrow, I'm off today Thumbs Up

Neither is mine, charged me for an extraction, but left the root in, went back six months later, he then decided he could get the root out, then had the nerve to want to charge me for another extraction, a couple of days later the second part of the root came up above the gum level, six months later at check up time asked if it bothered me, No it's fine, so he's left it be, then sends me letters every couple of months saying I have forgotten to pay for the last visit, no I didn't, they didn't ask, I didn't offer.

Right, I have an answer, it is covered in HTM 07-01 (Health Technical Memorandum)

Quote:
from HTM 07-01
Note
Removed items, such as teeth, are waste produced by
the healthcare organisation. Where the patient has
asked to retain the item, it is not considered waste,
since it has not been discarded.
As responsible organisations, there is a general duty of
care to ensure that items being returned to patients are
clean/disinfected; to provide the patient with advice
should they wish to discard it later; and, if appropriate,
that they have some packaging/instructions to return it
to the practice later if they change their mind. This
might, for example, prevent certain items subsequently
being discarded in the domestic refuse.

I went to the dentist doday for a check up but was there 3 weeks ago as I had had pain from a crown since Christmas, she yanked it out & I said can I keep it, wrapped it up in tissue & took it home. Have often in the past taken it home.
It's your tooth/crown so can't see why you can't have it. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

thanks guys, and for the HTM note Taz,
