Battery voltage question

Hello everyone,

The last 2 days i've noticed (according to my scangauge) that the battery voltage hasn't raised above about 12.6 volts. Being winter there is a fair load on the car (lights, heat, bottom warmers etc).

I do a decent journey each day of around 50 miles so plenty time to be warmed up.

Everything else is running fine - any suggestions - anything to worry about?

Ta!

I'm running in sub zero right now and checked mine at the weekend. I fully charged the battery using CTek on AGM setting. The standing voltage was 12.6 also.

I then did a cold crank test by monitoring the voltage at maximum draw, ie cold engine and cold conditions. The voltage never dipped below 10v at the peak. Upon starting it went up to 14.something, showing alternator was working.

I too worry about drain, I live in Sweden so it's cold for long periods. I use front and back screen heaters, seat and washer jet heaters plus DRL lights 24/7 (as it's the law).

As I understand it, the cold weather is hard on the battery and 12.6v is fine. If on cranking you dip below 9.6v then the battery is suspect.

Every now and again I set on my CTek on 'winter' setting, just to help when I do lots of short, heavy drain runs.

Hope this helps.

Is that 12.6v whilst driving along? If so then some thing is not right.

If that's engine at rest nothing to worry about Thumbs Up
Should be somewhere around 13.5/14v when engine is running.

It's 12.6 at engine running. 12.3 when engine is off...

Should be around 14.3v when the engine is running, if your scanguage is working properly then sounds like you have an alternator problem.

So weirdly - ok this morning - back up at 14.4-14.5

Only difference is i was in GGS for part of the journey (left in that mode from last night).

I'll keep an eye on it!

So - same 12.6 on the home tonight. So disconnected the battery for 5 - started up and again back upto 14.4.

Curious! - may be a phone call to the dealer!

If you still get low voltage at idle, might be worth using a multimeter to verify the scanguage reading. However, 12.3v when the engine is off is getting low and does suggest the battery is not receiving a charge.

Being a MY2014, it could be this:

Smart charging is stuck in "Low charge" mode below 13 volts.

Don't think you need to call the dealer if you've had no probs staring the car..
If you're going on your normal 50 mile drive, the alternator will do it's best to replenish the battery voltage.
So when you got home, 12.6 v is fine.
Then you cranked it, taking several hundred amps out of the battery during cranking, the alternator output voltage goes up to over 14v.
That's what should happen. The alternator is voltage sensed away.

14.4 again this morning - i'm more worried that the fact its immediately 12.6 after starting up that it isn't charging correctly.

Due its service soon might see what happens between now and then.

PS - the GGS mode is (I believe) the only one which remains set after ignition off.
