Fair enough, but I wonder why the engine cooling temp sensor was warmer with the ambient at -4 than 0 ?

Mine came on yesterday for the first time -3 here although car still failed to start after 6 attempts, I had to put the battery on charge over night . This morning -3 again no glow plug light but the car started first time so i think I may need a new battery. |

Although only owning the freelander 2 for a few weeks, I have never noticed the glow plug light.

Why the hell it have to be like this... why they cant design it to work like manualy from button etc, just like older cars, you just turn the key to glow so much as u want!

Mine lit for the first time in memory this morning! -1 deg in Portsmouth, with thick ice. Nice to know it works (2007 XS).

No coil light yet though engine has a definite delay before turning over a bit laboriously. Makes me wonder about battery life and whether its getting close to needing a replacement. 2010 XS |

It's not only to get the glow plug pre-heated, it also helps with cranking. The start relay is held in by Engine Man ECU until the engine starts. Normally, after a pre determined time, if the engine doesn't start, the Engine Man ECU open circuits the 0 volts at the start relay coil to stop cranking. This is to help you prevent flattening the battery. The delay and glow plug w/l works fine on my car and I think it's a really good feature. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice. |

That just shows the difference, I tried starting mine last night at about 2230 and it was -1 and no glow light or delay, just started right up. Same year as yours, same city as yours, same night and temp as yours. Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto |

Ay EY correctly pointed out, it's nothing to do with the ambient temperature, it's coolant temperature.

I replaced the battery about 18 months ago. There appears to be plenty life in it, it will turn over for 5 - 10 minutes before going dead. |
