Any one following the stolen defender epidemic?

So many going missing... Its clear it's organised but no one is doing any thing.

At the moment even if I was looking I would not dare buy one....

Brother in law has had two stolen off his drive, reckons that they are stripped and shipped overseas, Africa has a huge market for Defender parts.

Chesterfield police did a free marker system (not sure what is was ) for people with Landrovers beceause of the high volume of stolen cars.

I think if I were to buy one, I'd be looking at a number of different means of immobilisers, pedal locks, wheel locks etc. a shame to have to think like that.

Latest one that has just been posted is that enadale mountain rescue have just had lights and a snorkel stollen off theirs....

In general the thinking is its because the defender is coming to the end of production so there is a spike.

With signing up to Landy watch... More eyes out there may be chance of some recovery

I think if I had a Defender, I would want gates on the drive which set off an alarm if opened and high quality HD CCTV with good night vision overlooking the car. As said above, a shame you have to think like that. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

The Defenders brilliant (relative) simplicity is also it's achillies heel. Because it's design has remain unchanged for so long you can interchange parts between a much wider age spectrum of models compared to other makes. Add to that so few parts being stamped with chassis numbers it makes parts an easy target for thieves.
If your area has a large contingent of permanent members of the Irish caravan club...beware.

There is a centre diff lock available for fits defenders, key operated from the drivers seat, expensive and wont stop dismantlers. Also thieves can quite quickly unbolt the propshafts and then tow the car away.
but of all the theft deterents its the best I think At work
