Good Evening Tinker,
1998 Freelander, you might get an answer here but realistically you need to look elsewhere, the model you are looking at is an earlier version of Freelander. The members, or most of them, have the Freelander 2 model.

The Freelamder 1 was renowned for having a drivetrain made of Licorice and not particularly durable, that's as much help as I can be Thumbs Up

France 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Narvik Black

The IRD (intermediate reduction drive) was the issue with the FL1. It incorporates the front diff. It can be driven if noisy but is a pain to change and hence a bit pricey if you are paying someone to do it. John
