transmission fault error message

Hello folks, only had my 57plate manual fl2 for 4months everything been fine until boxing day, when driving down dual carriageway a warning message pops up "transmission fault reduced traction" the car appeared to continue to drive normally with no untoward noises vibrations etc. This is not a constant message as when car turned off and then restarted all systems appear to be functioning correctly the message does however reappear after 5-15 mins of driving again with no apparent difference in driving. I realise that I am going to need a code reader, but which ones are able to diagnose transmission and other systems. Also do you folks have any pointers in which area I should be looking as by going through the forum there appears to be a myriad of possible options. Thanks in advance for any advice or info.
Regards
Dave.

Could be a Haldex related problem and being a manual car for sure the error is there.
Search a little on the forum, you'll find the info needed.

Unfortunately it sounds like heldex problem. Had the same message on a previous FL2 and it was diagnosed as heldex and replaced, luckily for me it was only two years old so all under warranty

Would it be worth replacing the fluids and filters to see if that makes a difference at minimal cost?

I had exactly the same thing on mine, 2007 56 plate manual with 64k on the clock, after doing some homework I read lots about them being very sensitive to voltage drops / fluctuations etc and was told they can throw up error messages as a result of this.
I checked the battery and it was indeed the original, so 8 years odd old, plus the fact that my Girlfriend does short journies.
Anyway, changed the battery with a Yuasa 5 year guarantee good quality one and it's never come on again since - I would check your battery first as a starting point.

Thanks for that Rich, oils and filters sound like a good place to start. Reading the L/R online manual though gives no mention of haldex filters, any idea where these are located in the system. I have read here in one of the posts about a blocked inline filter but have no idea where this is and I dont want to start ripping things apart before I know where it is I should be starting, especially as these things appear so damned complex (well for me anyway as I was reared on old fashioned mechanics without all of the complexities of electrical /hydraulic systems.

See links in this thread. http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic21722.html
You can also see an exploded plan if you search on this site. http://lrparts.net.ru select the English version unless your Russan is good!
Note that you will probably have a 3rd gen haldex as yours is 2007 so you will need the Volvo filter not LR as that doesn't fit. The job of changing the filter and fluid is fairly simple if you can raise the car and you don't mind getting your hands dirty. You will need a syringe for the fluid change and you need to follow the instructions carefully for refilling the haldex with fluid. To clean the pump filter you will need to take the haldex unit off the vehicle, I didn't do this as it was a step too far for my abilities/confidence but I did change the main filter as this is easy to get off with an Allen key. Let me know if you need any more help.

I had exactly same fault happen whilst on holiday in 2013 when my FL2 was 12 months old, from memory I think it was a diff oil pressure sensor at fault - as your FL2 is still running absolutely the same as normal I doubt it is a major issue like the Haldex but more likely a sensor playing up. (say's the man who had 2 haldex units fitted in 12 months in a 2 year old FL2.....) Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black
Gone - 2014 BMW X3 M Sport Space Grey, faultless!
Gone - 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Bali Blue with xenons
Gone - 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Rimini Red with bodykit

cheers for that Rich, sorry about the delay in responding but have had computer issues. The links you gave make interesting reading and good advice. Oils, filters etc now ordered just waiting for delivery and a day when its not raining. Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks Shilen, i will check out the sensors after doing oils filters etc if fault is still apparent, as I am currently still awaiting delivery of diagnostic tools.

Have just fallen foul of the transmission fault traction reduced message. 41000 miles. Diagnosis from independent LR specialist is new Haldex required so it is in for repairs. Seeing as this fault has happened so often to members of this forum, I assume someone at LR has had a word or two with Haldex and asked why they couldn't design or manufacture a component that did not fail so regularly. 12MY 61plate FL2 TD4 auto GS Orkney Grey Roof spoiler full size spare

My Haldex pump failed recently. Cost was about 500 quid for new pump and labour from the Indy I use. Mechanic reckons it's down to the fact the unit is supposed to be sealed for life but he thinks it would be better to have an fluid change every few years. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Thanks for that. Indy is charging £780 for a complete new Haldex inc labour and VAT. Seemed a good price based on what is written here and it has to be done. Should be fixed by Monday with luck. 12MY 61plate FL2 TD4 auto GS Orkney Grey Roof spoiler full size spare

I've now got the same fault message appearing on my wifes 09 fl2. When the car is first started the warning doesn't appear for about 60 seconds and then displays. Does this mean it's more likely to be a sensor issue as it doesn't alarm straight away or does this seem the norm for this type of fault?

Or8it, that is how mine started. I took it to my indy who did a few tests on it, checked wiring connections etc and told me I needed to replace the pump. Not a big job but expensive. It could be an ABS sensor but it could be a few other things aswell. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.
