High pressure fuel pump

Whilst driving up to Scotland for a family Christmas I was making superb timing and was looking forward to arriving in Glasgow. We arrived in the Lakes and I went out to the third lane of the M6 when I lost all power and was informed the engine had gone into safe mode. I can't exactly describe being on an overtake in lane 3 with loss of power being very safe!
Managed to get to hard shoulder and engine died. Recovery called out who got the engine running and then plugged in diagnostics. He mumbled somthing about pressure fail. Car appeared to be running fine again and he reset the onboard diagnostics. No longer now in safe mode.
Off I went and managed about an hours drive before it did it again. Loss of power and found the hard shoulder quickly. I rested for ten minutes started the engine up and I was away again this time for forty minutes! Four breakdowns in total finishing in Glasgow Central blocking a junction!
Three great jocks quickly pushed me into a bus stop (thanks guys) and there I sat until a total recovery came.
The recovery driver appeared and I explained what had been happening and he said his brother in laws car had done the same. He said it was most likely the fuel pump gone.
My Freelander was strapped on the lift and off we went to my Father in laws house, the driver kept talking to me and although my wife is Scottish I was really struggling to understand what he was saying to me ! Real Glaswegion!
Warranty repair as I have had the car 5 months but I had to find a garage near Paisley who could work on the car. Very helpful garage owner found and the pump was Indeed at fault. £508 later and the car will be able to be collected. I had to fly home for work so leaving the car up there and it has now cost me six flights between Gatwick and Glasgow for me and my family Grrrrrrrrr.

oh that's bad luck mr what age is the car ?
I live not far from paisley in fact closer to Prestwick who have an airport and a train station straight to paisley ... usually much cheaper to fly into from anywhere. I think only stanstead fly there now though.

Sorry to hear your problems. I had a similar situation in April with my previous FL2, a 2010 TD4 manual.
Driving at 70mph Whistle on the overtaking lane of a dual carriageway with the family and luggage on board the engine cut out and I lost power steering. Engine would turn over but not restart. In the end it was diagnosed as a fuel pump fault, fortunately repaired under LR extended warranty and a replacement car provided so I could continue my holiday. I was 200 miles from home and LR offered to transport my car back to Sussex if it wasn't repaired before my holiday ended.
I lost confidence in my LR, sold the car then regretted it and bought another.

Try to change the fuel filter first and see...

I tend to agree with Alex Bow down . The fact that the engine will run again after a short period and that the time/distance between failures gets shorter and shorter would point towards the filter getting more and more clogged. Did the mechanics who changed the pump change the filter "while they were at it" leading to the impression that the pump change cured the problem? Did anyone try changing the filter (a service item and low cost) before changing the (expensive, high margin) pump? Just reading the error codes only shows symptoms.

Mine wouldn't restart after over an hour. LR diagnosed engine starved of fuel so replaced the pump under warranty. It had the filter replaced two weeks before the breakdown. As I have said before, I should have kept the car but in changing to the CRV it made me realise how good our FL2's are and I couldn't get another one quick enough.
Cars break, some for whatever reason more than others, but the FL2 has something about it that to me at least
makes it a special car that I want to continue to own.

bobbob good point about the filter, I will ask the garage, I am back in England and the car is still up in Scotland at the moment. I must admit as it was a warranty repair I have not got myself too involved in the diagnostics as I am not picking up the bill but certainly I will ask if the filter has been changed. The garage claims the pump was still running but the internals were failing/ failed causing the problem.
On the final breakdown the recovery disconnected the front fuel lines and not a drop was coming out when the ignition was turned on, there must have been a mega problem with the filter to beat a 'high pressure pump' to stop all fuel coming through.
I would guess that once the repair has been done and the new pump is in place a blocked filter would soon show up when they tested the car before returning it to me.
Luckily the dealer that sold me the car who has been brilliant during this breakdown has offered to take the car in free of charge when it comes back to check the car out and make sure the work done up in Scotland was sound. He also picked up a £110 of the bill that the warranty company declined to cover (diagnostics etc).

Not the high pressure fuel pump is drawing fuel from the tank...
On the same body with the high pressure fuel pump there is a lift pump (low pressure pump) which draws fuel from the tank through the filter. This low pressure fuel pump is based on suction by using a gear type design.
It's understandable that a gear type pump is unable to lift/suck the fuel over more than 4 meters of pipes from the tank through a clogged fuel filter...
