2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Santorini Black
Problem: Rattle/grinding noise from engine bay

Hi All,

I have searched the forum and google for a similar issue to what my landy has started doing but have not been able to find anything specific (apologies if there is)

I have a 2007 HSE freelander 2 manual.

It recently had a full service and MOT which passed with no issues. (1 week before xmas)

However since Xmas day its been making a grinding/vibration noise which appears to be coming from the front drivers side in the engine bay. It drives fine and i have no other problems bar this noise (check A/C and this appears to function fine along with fans)

It can be rather loud and only happens at low revs or idle (in gear with clutch down or neutral), as soon as you apply some revs the noise goes. normal driving is fine until i have to stop or change gear which lowers the revs.

I have made a recording of the noise while parked up (did do a recording with bonnet open but the engine hides the noise on the recording somewhat).

It seems to me something is loose since the service but before i book it into a garage to check it out i wanted to fire this across anybody else that might know the issue or have experience similar.

Thanks in advance,

Smile

Hi H-M. Not heard or experienced such a noise with the 2 Freelanders I have had - but, thinking engines generally, my FIRST thought was a loose crankshaft pulley or similar. Also could be exhaust on loose heat shields rattling. Not going to be easy to find. Try access through r/h wheel arch and removable plastic panel. Has your car had any work done in the cam belt/aux drive belt area? (include water pump pulley/idler pulley/alternator/air con whilst you are there) They are all in this area.

Good luck!

Hi, I have the same issue, sounds identical. Had a look and from what I can tell it is vibration from the crankshaft pulley, mine appears to be wobbling about a fraction but is tight when you try and move it with your hands. It is the lowest pulley on the drivers side, if you take the engine shield off and listen underneath that's where it sounds the loudest. Got mine booked in next week as it is a step too far for me as you need to use clamps to hold the pulleys/shafts in the correct position for timing. Good luck Thumbs Up

You might want to check they have tightened the engine shield after the oil change.

I took my shield off to inspect the lower part of the engine so I dont think that is the issue.

Can't help with suggestions of what it might be any more than those suggested by others BUT.....if it's appeared since the service and wasn't there before it suggests the garage have left something loose? Suggest going back and seeing if they can deal with it, hopefully while you wait!
Let us know what it is/was when you know? 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

Hi - Could it possibly be the Throttle Valve gearing stripped.
Regards.
Gordon.

Unlikely, Gordon. The rattling is at idle/low revs, not at shutdown (throttle symptoms). Rattle disappears at higher revs. Symptomatic of a loose item held still by centrifugal force at higher revs. Also it sounds "heavy". That's why I immediately plumped for the crankshaft pulley. From RichP's comments, I may have been right. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

I had a similar noise that surfaced intermittently when at idle. Eventually traced it to a loose bolt on the towbar… Can you feel any vibration through the floor of the vehicle? MY10 TD4 SE Auto

There are two chains that may cause a rattle if worn and until take up, one is the oil pump drive chain encased behind the crankshaft pulley, the other is the camshaft timing chain (not to be confused with the camshaft drive belt) but this one is quite short and higher up although on the same side.

Thanks all for the help!

Got it booked in to a garage opposite my work for Friday (convenience) to check it out.

I can check the engine guard bolts before I drop it in, this was a thought of mine at the beginning. Although checking the crankshaft pulley is something i probably wont be able to achieve although i will take a look.

Are there any repercussions for driving it until then? I have a 30 mile round trip to work each day (bar Thursday of course!) I presume not actually knowing the issue for sure means this question is a bit open to say the least.

Regards,

I think you have answered your own question there H_M. If/when you get it fixed, DO come back and let us know what fixed it. We get far too many who just look into the forum for an answer to a problem then we never hear from them again!

Thanks for that, I will get those chains changed as well.
