Quite a sweeping statement not having owned one yet. In your opinion maybe. Let's wait and see how it pans out, the Freelander is a very nice and capable motor.

No one has ever said anything negative about the Freelander and your right, it is a nice and capable car. But having driven several Discovery Sports now, well three anyway of varying specifications, all I say is what I have found, and that the DS is for sure a good step forward over the Freelander.

As I said, it should be as it is the newer design car, and if it isn't better than the Freelander, then JLR have dropped one major Censored . So its a good job they have done a fantastic job of it. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Mav71, can you comment on the regular HSE leather vs the Lux Windsor?

Our DS will see weekend warrior kind of abuse most if not every weekend, but will need to ferry clients and colleagues in the week, so weather/outdoor life proof seat covers are the norm for us after 6pm on a Friday. Do the DS Lux seats have the ruffled finish leather of the top spec Freelander or the more snugly fitted top spec Evoque finish to the seating?

I'm concerned about early life abuse to the seats as we aren't the nicest to our audi's leather which has held up admirably but is snuggly fitted rather than rouched/ruffled. I'm sure the HSE leather would survive as it looks more fitted, I am concerned that the Windsor, if it is looser fitting, would suffer. An expat that never went home.

The DS HSE Lux leather doesn't have as much of the ruffled effect as the Freelander as it has a 'ribs' design stitched in to the seats which tightens it up. But it still have a slight ruffled effect on the top panels of the seats. I would say it is better that the Freelanders leather, due to the way the panels are put together which should allow it to keep its shape and stay tighter for longer.

HSE leather in the Freelander is poor quality and has too many compromises, and only covers the seat facing, as the seat sides, backs etc are all vinyl. Same goes for the Lux, only leather seat facings. I have found that the leather in the Lux is not great either. It's just a softer version of the HSE leather.

But then again, I am comparing it to the leather in my Astra convertible and my last 10 cars which had bespoke leather interiors using Bridge of Wier leather. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

DSport Engine

Been drifting through this thread...having ordered a DSport HSE....can't quite get my head around all the criticism of the launch engine...all those who have a late (or earlier FL2) seem to have lumped out money on a vehicle with the same 'old' venerable 2.2 engine strange it wasn't a problem then Question we have known about JLR's plans to intro a new range of engines for a good while now ...the 2.2 hasn't stopped Ewok sales exceeding ever expectation....

Good point. I have always said there is nothing wrong with the 2.2, but I can't help but think it is a mistake launching an all new car with an old power unit.

Can you imagine if JLR launched the new Jag XE with the old engine? It would get slated.

All the press reports I have read have been favourable about the DS, but the only real criticism being the old engine. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

The ones complaining about the price won't have ordered at all I suspect, I wonder what the percentage of private sales v lease company sales is?

Very True! I don't think the company car driver will be ordering them yet, as a £35k car with emmisions as high as the DS is at present will mean massive company car tax bills. The net tax per month for a 40% tax payer would be between £260 and £300. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. I'll admit I was expecting it to be a bit cheaper than it is, especially with the old engine. My original order was SE but by the time I went through the option list I was at HSE prices. So thought may as well go for it. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Ukraine 2013 Freelander 2 2.0T SE Auto Fuji White

I am intrigued especially with the urban petrol consumption figure.

Petrol Freelander MY14 / DS MY15

Urban 13.5 / 10.6 (L/100km)
Extra Urban 7.5 /6.5

Combined 9.6 / 8.0
Emissions combined 224 /191

KW 177 / 176.5
rpm 5500 / 5800

Torque 340 / 340
rpm 3200 / 1750

Weight kg 1775 / 1744 (5 seats)
0-100 kph 8.8 / 8.2

The DS petrol engine is only using 78.5% of the fuel of the Freelander!? Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I think it has two ideal target markets Mav from LR's point of view

1. Those with disposable income will spec top end models without even really paying much attention to the specification levels across the range.

2. Those who cannot buy a brand new discovery. An MY15 SE full fat (sounds weird calling a disco that Laughing) cost £41595 IIRC.

A DS HSE LUX manual is £41195 and auto is £42995.

So a top spec manual DS is still short of £400 against its big brother which is only a basic model - Christ it doesn't even have leather seats for that price Rolling Eyes

The auto HSE LUX DS only costs £1400 more than the entry spec full fat.

At the end of the day as we all know it's nice to have the toys but essentially the running gear is the same underneath! MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior
