I have done a few thousand miles in a couple of months and have noticed a bit of a whine noise has developed, most noticeable in low gears (1,2,3) but not really noticeable at higher speeds although I think it is still there, just masked by wind/road noise. It sounds to me (sitting in the driver's seat) as though it's coming from the front near side - i.e. the gearbox side of the engine. When travelling at low-ish speed, the while disappears if I coast in neutral so it does seem as if it is linked to the tranmission in some way. The while is slightly louder when slowing down to a stop compared with pulling away from standstill.

I've searched the forums and have come up with rear diff bearings as a common problem - but this does seem like it's coming from the front.

I also have a 2010 HSE with a similar problem.
I first noticed this whine, if that's the best way of describing it - whirring would be a good description also.
I don't think it's the rear diff on mine as it's now done about 10k miles and is only slowly getting worse.
It does sound a bit like a wheel bearing, which quietens down when cornering sometimes, but is always there.
I have been waiting to get the car up on a lift at a friends MOT station so we can have a listen, but not had the time as yet.
I suppose one saving grace for me was a full warranty when I bought the car this time last year for 3 or 4 years - don't remember which now.
Hopefully when I eventually get it looked at, it'll be covered on that.

Having had the (dis)pleasure of listening to this for the past week or so I now think it might be coming from the back end - so I guess rear diff bearings are the prime suspect(?)

I've jacked the back wheels up and there is no slack at the wheel bearings.

I too had a similar whine, went when I renewed the Wrangler tyres.
Just a thought as I know others have experienced this.

This has continued to get worse and last week I took it to a small independent garage for an opinion. Confirmed rear diff bearings.

I then took it to the local LR dealer who confirmed the same and LR customer services have agreed to contribute 75% of the cost without quibble.

Today (Saturday), nobody at the LR dealer can find my paperwork to tell me how much this work will actually cost me.

As I understand it, it will either be a "low level" diff repair (which I guess is replacement of the bearings) or a full repair (which I assume is a new diff). Can anyone give me ballpark figures on what a LR dealer charge for these two repairs?

If you do a search on here you will find various prices. It seems to be you can get it for around the £500 mark, but it sems that if you get a contribution from LR, the dealer charges full whack then with LR's contribution it brings it down to the £500 to £600 mark again. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior
