Timing Belt or Chain?

Hi Guys,

I've got a Freelander 2 TD4 HSE 56 plate its just done 88,000 miles.

I've been bitten before when a timing belt snapped on a previous car (audi TT) and it cost thousands to repair! I've looked on the internet and there seems to be a lot of conflicting information as to when to replace on the Landrover or even if its a chain or belt??

Can anyone on the forum possibly clarify for me?

My understanding is that it's a belt.

The original Freelander 1 had a chain, I believe.

I was told that a lot of "cambelt failures" are actually failures of water pumps bearings or belt tensioners which throw the belt and hence the damage and that not many belts actually break. We had just this on a Renault Clio and when the engine was stripped down it was clear that the waterpump bearing was the culprit. I believe that the main reason that the Freelander engine cambelt replacement is as long as 150k miles is due to the fact that the waterpump is driven separately.

The water pump IS driven directly by the toothed camshaft belt.

The water pump is driven from the Cambelt.

In fact, LR sell 2 belt kits, one with a pump and one without Thumbs Up

Just had a look. The pipes from the radiator go to something at the gearbox end of the engine. Any suggestions as to what this is, am I missing something?

Fair enough but how come the cambelt interval is so long on the Freelander? Most cars talk about 60k miles then replace. Can't be that they use extra special belts and water pumps surely?

The interval is set by Ford and seems to be standard across all the cars that use that engine, it is a long time especially as our vehicles could be subjected to arduous conditions?
That said I cant recall a failure on here and given the number of this engine type in various other cars it doesn't seem to be an issue, of course, failure is catastrophic and very expensive, I keep cars that have full warranty so don't worry.
The belt on the engine is quite a beefy affair, maybe its less stressed as a result?

South Africa 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 S Manual Zermatt Silver

I have a 2007 td4 s freelander.

Currently on 197 000kms ,had the cambelt done on 168 000kms.

It has both a belt and chain, one only needs to replace chain if it gets noisy. My belt still looked very good upon removal, i wanted to gave this done though for peace of mind.
