Realspeed ,it's law that you can't dive deep unless you pass the tests, it's a very dangerous sport . If you want to go and buy all the gear and dive ,go knock yourself out , to me that's a very foolish idea. You can't go and hire gear without showing you're diving log book .

Nothing to stop me buying diving gear on the internet by one means or another and dive as deep as I like if I wanted to that is which I don't. Outside territorial waters there is nothing to stop me and not against any laws. Just to make a point.

However maybe I should explain. as a toddler I fell into a fish pond in my uncles back garden and nearly drowned at about 3 years old and my 5 year old cousin pulled me out and was revived by grownups so am told. Obviously it is something I don't remember but was told as soon as I was old enough to understand but I did wonder up to then why water scared me for the next few years.
Since then water scares me to death, I can't even stand under a shower without panicking I think I might drown. Ok it is a phobia, but so deep routed I can't get rid of it. Swimming alone if I dared would make me pass out. Even having a bath has to be in shallow water

So no way would you get me into water let alone under it. Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Many years ago (15+ at least) I bought a Citizen Eco Drive watch with titanium coated metal strap for around 」100 and it has never let me down. OK short months I had to alter the date for the following month but that is common on most watches. It has been dropped by accident several times, stood up to vibration when using a power drill and never given a moments trouble.

I have to say it is the most reliable watch I have ever owned and needs no batteries either nor winding up

+1 on this. I have the "Radio Controlled" version which is the ultimate idle git's watch as it changes the calendar automatically and is set by the atomic clock to the right time - I don't have to do anything. Result! John

Had a cheap Accurist which put up with everything from diving to skydiving. Never missed a beat. Had the battery replaced at a local jeweler and remained water tight (certainly to a few metres).
Replaced eventually with an early Seiko Kinetic. Never needed a battery, remained waterproof and was accurate to a few seconds every year.
Stupidly replaced with a mechanical Tag Heuer. Water proof and looks nice. Gains time like Dr Who. 5 minutes a month perhaps. Not worth the silly money I paid for it. So much so I'm thinking of flogging it (they seem to keep their value well at least) and getting another Seiko or Accurist/Citizen etc.

so basically if i have read it right Realspeed Question

you are quite within your personal rights to buy as much deep sea diving gear and use it without the right qualifications, as long as the water is no higher than 3 inchs in a bath Whistle

to be honest, i know what your saying about big brother, but the way I look at this, is, the qualifications are there to save you from killing yourself and then someone spending money and risking their life recovering you Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

A tip for you, if I may.

If it's gaining, when you take it off at night, lay it face up. Similarly, if its losing, do the opposite and lay it face down. They usually settle down after a couple of days, and whilst will never be as accurate as a Quartz, this method balances out the gravitational effects on the hairspring relatively easily. Foraging near Gaydon....

I agree to a point, but there is a difference between actually knowing what you're doing and having some particular piece of paper which allows you to do some particular thing. You can know what you're doing but not have the piece of paper.

For example, my degree course included a year of electrical engineering - including circuit design, messing around with high-voltage, single-phase and 3-phase supplies, etc. That's way more than the average electrician will have done. And yet I'm not allowed to add a socket to my home because I don't have the right piece of paper!

That's the trouble with this kind of bureaucracy - it can't distinguish between knowledge, ability and certification. Like Realspeed I find it very frustrating at times.

Great tip Badger, ill give it a try for my watch. Nothing special, a Russian made watch by Vostok, but it likes to gain a minute or two a day. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Thanks Badger!

As it happens my watch is always face up on the bedside table. So either it would gain much more if I turned it over or perhaps I need to turn it over to have the desired effect?
I'll give it a try and see if it makes a difference.

I too did a 5 year apprenticeship as an electrician and day and night school in electrical /mechanical engineering, Yet because i have not kept up with the latest regulations and registered etc I too am not allowed to change a plug. The annoying thing is I later on worked for BT as a switchboard fitter with far more complicated wires/circuits than ever as an electrician Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

I've worked in electrics and electronics, completed a 5 year apprenticeship that today money can't buy, I was taught to weld, turn, mill and fit in my first 18 months which I have kept up, this allows me to make my own water gauge, test gas integrity, wire a plug or socket, including rewire the whole house, with a bit of help from the internet I can find the latest standards, wiring codes, gas losses over any time period and and the latest specifications. I don't know the regulations on working to heights, but I do know if I fall off the wrong way over 2m it hurts and could be fatal. Common sense says self preservation comes first and your mate comes secondary, unless you're in charge and can't blame anyone else, recourse to law is not a great satisfaction if you're dead, to you or your family. Let Darwin rule and the world eventually becomes a better and safer place, the idiots with certificates will still die no matter what rules or laws are made or passed Smile my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
