Sorry if this is a stupid question, but does anyone think that wheel diameter makes a difference? I am going to get a set of winter wheels and tyres so would like to know if anyone has found a difference in performance in winter with different diameter tyres, otherwise I will probably go for a cheeper set which I presume would be 17"? Any other advice would be appreciated. Cheers

A 17" inch Veredestein would offer no difference in perfarmance to 19" just the smaller sizes are easier in the wallet and perhaps to smaller sizes with a larger side profile would lessen the chance of a damaged rim.

Now there's a thought, why would 17" tyres be cheaper than 19"?

They are similar width, and the 17" have taller sidewalls so more rubber.

The first set of mud tyres are on there last legs with 4mm tread left, so Winters on 18" rims going on in November, then fit the spare set of mud tyres to the 17" rims, and all set for the coming summer

What am I going to do when this set of Goodyear MTRs wear out?

And, right on the dot, LR have sent me an e-mail suggesting I fit winter tyres. they are suggesting Goodyear Ultragrips or Conti Cross Contacts. And they will be happy to supply them for around £1000 a set!

Gents we've never had the need to run winters on our LR's and that is going back before I was born I therefore cannot comment on the difference!

AD the 22's are not M+S rated and even if they were I'd rather run the stock 19s as I won't clean them plus it's a shame to have brand new wheels and tyres lying around  MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

I just finished mounting my new winters, 225/75-16 Hankook iPikes. There's snow in the forecast but I haven't even rolled 'em out of the garage yet. The difference between these & all-season or M&S is in several areas:
- softer compound
- deeper tread (over 1/2")
- sipes to allow water to evacuate & the tread-blocks to conform better

They're also studdable but studs generally inhibit grip in more conditions than they help.

I've run winters for over 20 years on FWD & RWD cars with great results; can't wait to see what the LR2 can do with 'em!

My RWD C-Class Mercedes is essentially undriveable in the winter with summer tires. The winter tires make ALL the difference. I've actually been able to tow an AWD Audi out of the ditch with my little MB wearing winter boots!

I have never tried winter tyres. I currently have a set of Kumho KL78s (with 4mm tread) fitted and I'd be interested in any opinion on how they will perform if it (1) gets v cold or (2) snows.

As above, I think 4mm is pretty minimal for winter. I'd be inclined if it were me to get a spare set of wheels and some winter tyres, then put the Kumhos back on for one final summer. Mind you it never snows in Wales does it? Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
