2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Lago Grey
Coughing on motorway

Hi all,

I'm having intermittent problems with my FL2 on the motorway.

Normally when cruising along, usually at 70mph, on cruise control it will occassionally cough. Just for a second, it loses power and then immediately regains. It just feels like a jolt. Very un-nerving!

My best guess is a blocked fuel filter. Any thoughts?

The car is a 2007 SE 2.2TDI. 96000 miles. Last serviced (minor) at 95000. Last service (major) 85000.

Many thanks.[/list]

Wet or dry? There is a recent thread about odd power losses with wet air filter caused by missing drain in base of airbox. If yours does this in the dry then it's a new problem. Check they changed the fuel filter at the last service. Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red
Gone... 2008 (09MY) XS Td4 Manual Stornaway Grey
Prior... 2003 G4 Discovery 2, 1998 Disco 1 and 1997 Disco 1 Company car before that
Also gone in Nov'13, after 7.5 yrs, to new owners with time for more TLC - 1980 Series III 88

It happening when dry, but it might be worth me having a good look inside the airbox anyway, in case there's some moisture hanging around.

As far as the fuel filter goes, it was definitely changed as I use a small local mechanic who fits the components I supply!

Guys, thanks for all your help. I'll tackle it this week as the juddering is now happening more often (around 6 times per hour on the motorway).

Just to clarify, I believe the steps are:

Remove front passenger side wheel (Can someone confirm this is the correct wheel?).

Remove access panel in wheel arch liner to access bottom LH side of engine block.

Remove crankshaft position sensor (pictures in other thread - one bolt and an electrical connection.

Replace all.

Many thanks again.

You can do it your way, but a quicker route would be via the Off Side Front Wink

If you look under the bonnet, on the Near Side is the Gearbox, ancillary belts, pulleys etc are on the Off Side.

Haha! Excellent work! That's exactly the kind of tip I was hoping for.

So I cleaned the sensor this evening with some brake cleaner, and I'll see if it helps. Easy job really - 20 mins all in all, and no need to remove any of the wheel arch liner as you can get under it.

Thanks all for the tips!

Mine just died on me. The 1st time the engine restarted immediately. The 2nd time, it wouldn't start and the display showed all kinds of non-sensical (for this situation) messages like Reduced Engine Performance, HDC fault etc.

In the end, it was a CKP (crankshaft) sensor.

The following are similar items with equivalent part numbers:

BMW 13627805004
VOLVO 30711104
CITROEN 96374669
PEUGEOT 9637466980
MAZDA SU001-00640

This is obviously not a LR specific part.

Just to report back after a couple of long drives, the above actions seem to have solved this issue!

Many thanks to all involved Thumbs Up

Not personally convinced whether it was cleaning the sensor (mine wasn't that dirty, and it's sealed), or disconnecting and reconnecting it which helped. In any event, it's now fine.

Personally I have known of 3 cars out in this part of the world with similar problems, all attributed to bad crimping of the CK connector. All these cars were built in the UK factory.
