OSX Yosemite

New OSX out this autumn to tie in with iOS8 and it will utilise this new 'continuity' business. If you have an incomplete document or email on your mac, you can seamlessly transfer it to your iPad or iPhone that runs iOS8 and vice versa.

Also, by using hotspot, you will be able to make and receive calls and send and receive texts on your mac as opposed to just iMessages. The only caveat is that your mac must be running OSX Mavericks at the moment in order to download it (mine is). LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Just updated my MacBook Pro to this and pleased with it. The layout/look is now like the apps on the iPhone or iPad. It seems faster to me and more features on iTunes.

One tip though, if you have an SSD rather than HDD, update TRIM enabler before installing the new OSX. When I rebooted it said my TRIM has been disabled as the app was not compatible with Yosemite. After updating the app and rebooting twice, I re-enabled TRIM Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

not done it myself yet, but those on Disco3 have been saying it takes a long time to update, with more and more downloads appearing as it goes along

It did take a fair while and corrupted twice because the screensaver kicked in and interrupted it Evil or Very Mad

3rd time was fine because I kept an eye on it and didn't allow the screensaver to kick in. With hindsight, I would have disabled screensaver first. You always get loads of updates as the apps have to be updated by the manufacturers to cope with the new OSX.

It would have been a pain to reboot all the time if I still had the HDD but since I upgraded to SSD, everything is very fast Thumbs Up

Just need to backup to time machine now LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

No, I gave that a miss. Partly because I tried it once, last year or year before and it was crippling to the speed and partly because I didn't feel the need to use it. I only have Uni documents, not private business docs so I backup to dropbox on those.

Everything else goes to iCloud for backup or time machine hard drive. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I don't think time machine can backup to iCloud due to lack of space. I had to pay extra (79p a month) for 20GB of storage after my holiday pics far exceeded the standard 5GB.

My HDD is 2TB hence it is suitable. I think you would need very big iCloud storage for it to work (if the system even lets you.) LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

a quick search elsewhere says not straight forward

thinking of backing up to a RAID system (something like WD My Cloud Mirror with which ever TB drive to suit

they allow you access from where ever, but its not an online backup from what i can see

I would like both, local drives, but they auto mirroring to a cloud backup
