have found that both my driver and passenger seat have a split in the side panels on the pleather.

just over 5 years old with 28000 miles, so out of warranty.

( both wife and myself are not overweight !! )

can anyone recommend a repair person in Scotland ?

you should be able to replace them via LR Parts dept, try dan at Duckworths

Mav71 swapped his bolster at the same time which seems a good idea

If its anything like my headrest, no retrimmers reply, so can't like small jobs etc Confused

is it quite easy to fit without special tools or skills ?

and do you need to remove the seat to do it ?

I have just swapped out my drivers seat base with a second hand passenger one. It did come with the complete base frame mind you! But the passenger and drivers side are the same except for the passenger has a load indicator built in.

The seat base comprises a steel tub, the foam cushion, a heater panel (if fitted) and the outer cover, leather usually. Removing and replacing isn't difficult by the way.

For your info, new leather base covering is approx £250 + VAT, the foam base is approx. £100 + VAT.

The way I did it meant all I had to do was unbolt and disconnect the old and refit - simples! An added bonus with this meant that as it was the passenger side, it hadn't had a lot of use so the foam cushion feels like new. 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

so if I bought new leather base covers and foam cushions is that all I would need ?

and would I have to remove the seats to fit ?

Taking the seat out makes it easier. Removal isn't difficult, disconnect the electric plugs under the seat, remove the four plastics at each end of the seat rail and star drive the big four bolt holding the rail to the chassis out. Then just be careful manoeuvreing the seat out in case you catch the door or other bits of car trim that are about.

Good morning Iain, you don't have to remove the whole seat. The drivers side base is fixed by 4 bolts, the passenger only 2.

Access is good to all the bolts, but, you do need to be a bit flexible.

On the drivers side, first pull the plastic trim off the front of the base, it is held in with 4 metal clips.

Then from the rear passenger footwell undo the two 10mm bolts.

Back to the front foot well, adjust the seat forward, and if possible raise the seat base. You will see the remaining two bolts, undo.

Gently lift the base. You will then discover where the cabling is tethered to the base. There are two loops which the cables can be unhooked from towards the rear of the base. The other two cannot be opened up but will detach with a bit if encouragement. Unplug the heated seat connector (green) and lift out.

The passenger side is as above except there is no trim at the front of the base, also the bolts are only at the front, the rear is located to the frame by means of two lugs.

There are two connections on the base too. One is the heated seat connector (green), the other a seat occupancy sensor (brown plug). This one may be a bit fiddly to disconnect as it locates into a block. The base I had was attached to the frame so I had good access not sure what it is like in situ.

By the way, I checked what I was quoted by Dan at Duckworths, the cover was £215 + VAT, the foam base £85 + VAT, I'm not sure how easy it is to remove the heater panel from the foam but I believe it is possible. These are priced at £145 + VAT each, if you need them. Remember these prices are through the forum sponsor and are discounted, Dan's the Man!

However, since taking the above pics I had a go at taking the base cover off. The refitting looks like a nightmare.

Take a look at this pic, after unclipping the cover from the base tub the cover and foam come away from the tub as one. When you try to separate the cover from the foam it is fixed to the foam by a series of rings which loop around rods which appear to be moulded in the foam.

I haven't tried but I would imagine that by undoing each ring would give access to the next. Looks fiddly! 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

Legoman, you beat me! You would also need to undo the seat belt from the seat if you elect to take the whole seat out. 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

I replaced the pleather side panel myself. Removed seat base as above, then removed cover from base/foam. Hand stitched new panel on with cover inside-out then folded back edges and replicated the saddle-stitch trim, picking up on original holes. Used heavy industrial thread and needles designed for upholstery/leather. A long job done over 3 nights, not sure if I want to do another one! A local trimmer had quoted £100 though not sure what the result would have been like compared to my lovingly hand stitched version! Wink 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

thanks very much for the info guys.

and brilliant pictures philclemo, thanks

seems to be quite a big job, for me anyway,

I'll sit on it for the moment, excuse the pun, and give it a bit of thought.

must say though my wife is a bit disapointed and hinting now at changing the car, the fact that I have a 28 year old golf with no sign of this happening doesn't help !!

@philclemo. Does it mean the LHD have the drivers seat fixed with only 2 bolts, or is the base the seat cushion? Makes life even more complicated for me as expected when its the seat. I am looking into raising the whole frame 5cm since I am quite tall. Do you know about anyone who did this on the lefthand side... Shocked [ Freelander 2 TD4e MY10 Sport manual. Hi Dan,

I think the LHD drivers seat will probably have the 4 bolts. The difference is that there is a cradle which raises and lowers the base. If you look in my pics the passenger base only has plastic lugs which locate onto the frame. With regard to raising the frame I am not aware of anyone doing this, sorry. 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)
