Servers swamped due to unprecedented demand...no really? You'd think they would know exactly how many people would be renewing today. Confused

I have never understood why petrol stations are not fitted with ANPR camera's.

You pull up at a pump, and the ANPR checks your reg for tax, insurance, MOT and if there is an issue with any one of them it doesn't release the nozzle from the pump. If you have no fuel then you cannot drive SIMPLE!!!

They do! My wife had the plates nicked from her car in Derby and when she reported it the police said it was invariably used to fill up and drive off. They (thieves, not police) do this overnight so by the time it is reported they have ditched the stolen plates and are back on the correct ones.

Look out for a lot more nicked plates now that you don't need a tax disc. Perhaps there needs to be a more secure way of fixing them rather than the cheap plastic bolts. GONE - '07 TD4 GS manual Zermatt Silver

I have little sympathy with those caught up in the server meltdown at the DVLA.

Don't understand why so many people are trying to tax their car today?

Those whose tax ran out yesterday have been able to renew for weeks - why leave it until today?

Quote on the BBC news site suggests one chap is "disgusted. I need to tax my car urgently to go to work, and now I can't as the servers have crashed".

If it was that mission critical why didn't you tax it 2 weeks ago?

Sure - stuff happens that some people HAVE to do it today, and you could argue the infrastructure should be a bit beefier (especially on "changeover day"). But for everyone to leave it to the last minute simply means they have been, to a certain extent, the architects of their own misfortune.

I echo those sentiments entirely, too many hard of thinking numbskulls around, serves them right.

I tend to agree but I guess there will have been a lot of people waiting for the end of the month pay to go in the bank before they can tax the car. John

No more than any other previous month.

The extra people who have logged on today (leaving it until the last minute) that have brought it to it's knees have clearly fundamentally misunderstood the whole new system.

I say again - I have no sympathy.

It would be ironic if the police ANPR cameras used the same computer system to check Whistle

I agree also. At the end if the day, people could tax via online or via a post office. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

It's a bit like think it was in 1974 when front number plates on motorbikes became unnecessary. I remember taking a pair of pliers and riving mine off. All my mates did it as well. For one day we felt like criminals, then the novelty wore off. Will be the same when the tax disc comes out.

I taxed my car today at the post office, all I got to prove to anyone in person if asked is my Post Office receipt. Ive scanned it so I will keep the original in the car.
