I'm not sure if this has been covered in the preceding discussion, but I'll raise it again even if it has:

If I sell my car on the 15th of the month, I need to apply for a refund of the tax. Under the old system, and I assume the same applies for the new, you cannot get a refund for a partial month, so I end up losing the 15 or 16 days of tax to the end of the month.

The new owner has to tax my car from the 1st of the month. So he pays for 15 days that he hasn't even owned the car.

Result: the car effectively has 13 months of tax in a 12 month period and the government gains the value of that extra month.

Is this right? More to the point, is this fair?

When I picked up the new car yesterday, the dealer said I wouldn't get a tax disc , car was registered online and I got a copy of the declaration.

One of the first in this country to drive about with no tax disc. Thumbs Up

Well, legally anyway. Laughing

Not come across this online form before that was given by the dealer. He must register it and the DVLA acknowledges it and they print out the resultant form confirming its been registered and duty paid. Suppose that's the way everything will now be.

Just removed my tax disc in readiness for tomorrow.
Even though I live in the middle of nowhere, a ANPR camera has just appeared in our village (population you could count on fingers and toes).
I see nothing wrong with this for the law abiding citizen.
Just feels odd not having a tax disc! Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Laughing My daughter beat you by a week or so!! Although it did cause a bit of a father/daughter argument!! When my daughter picked her new car up back on the 20th September I asked her why she didn't have a tax disc when the new regulations didn't come in for another week and a half.

She said the dealer told her she was allowed to drive around for two weeks without a tax disc as it was a brand new car (she had some sort of certificate to say so), and in any event the two weeks would take her through to 1st October when she wouldn't need one anyway.

Having never had a brand new car Big Cry I'd never heard of this rule about (under the old regulations) not needing a tax disc for the first two weeks, so I assumed she'd made it up. It would appear not.

It was strangely odd driving around without that little innocuous disc in the corner!!

ANPR cameras.
The A77 from south of Girvan to Kilmarnock has 15 gantries of average speed cameras over the 30 miles. Will they become ANPR as well!!!!!
They opperate by front no plate recognition already, motorbikes dont have a front no plate so they have a great time!!! All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone

Yep, she beat me by a week. Thumbs Up

I'd never heard of the two week thing either and I've had new cars for the last 20 years, but the dealer did mention it in the same breath as saying I didn't need it anyway.

Things have changed when you register a car. You used to be able to do it via the local DVLA office, but of course they are out of the window. Rolling Eyes

Maybe it was in preparation for the new regs.

tim_Roberts - yes it's true and no it's not fair. Apparently also if you have a vehicle that's tax free for the first year, that only applies to the first owner. Second owner pays, even within the first year.
btw you no longer have to reclaim the tax. You get an automatic refund when you send off the change of ownership slip. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

It's never been a fair system. You always had to tax a car from the beginning of the month regardless of when purchased and you only got back any full months if surrendering. Granted you could get round this if the licence was left with the car. There is only one fair way of taxing a car and this is via how often you use it.
Why does an OAP who likes to get some shopping once a week pay the same as a company rep doing 1000's of miles.

Ah, the old nothing to fear if you're doing nothing wrong argument. Nope, not buying that one! Particularly as the ANPR system can be used for all kinds of things beyond tax evasion, speed control and parking enforcement. It can, for example, be used to track the movements or anyone of interest to the authorities for any reason. Big Brother is watching, and that's not good.

And then there's this:
Quote:
Innocent drivers could face penalty notices from the DVLA due to the scrapping of tax discs, as new figures show police cameras wrongly identify up to 1.2 million vehicles per day.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/roa...ivers.html

1.2 million errors every day! One wonders how many people are receiving / will receive enforcement notices due to errors in the system if there's this level of error. Technology is fine when it works, but that kind of error level should surely be regarded as unacceptable. (It's aroung 4% apparently - imagine if, for example, the banks made errors on 4% of transactions, would we regard that as acceptable? I think not! So why is it acceptable here?)

I have never understood why petrol stations are not fitted with ANPR camera's.

You pull up at a pump, and the ANPR checks your reg for tax, insurance, MOT and if there is an issue with any one of them it doesn't release the nozzle from the pump. If you have no fuel then you cannot drive SIMPLE!!! Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black

All fuss over nothing, really.

ANPR cameras have been around for years and years, and have been checking for RFL evaders (and more) for more or less the same amount of time.

1.2 million mis-reads of plates per day? Yeah - seems reasonable; remember that isn't an error rate, a vast proportion of those mis-reads won't have generated a plate at all due to fast moving cars, obscured plates by other cars, dirty plates etc.

Will those 1.2 million mis-reads all result in summons for tax avoidance? Of course not - it didn't last year, or last week when the ANPR cameras were doing exactly the same job.
