Ok, was asking over on this thread http://www.freel2.com/forum/post234265.html#234265 how to use axle stands (never seen or used them before) for prep for changing the reservoir and someone has said this can be done without lifting the wheels off the ground.

Is this correct (or at least best practice)? If I can do this job without the need to lift the car then even better. Can the wheels be turned with the engine off (please excuse the ignorance - I really know nothing!). Or would the engine need to be on to power the steering with the wheels on the ground?

Simple questions but Id rather know now than having to post emergency questions when I break the car :-/

Was he standing on a set of steps in that video? He didn't seem to have the vehicle jacked up. Whistle

I wasn't going to say that 😃 thanks for the video though.

I may well try and film my job including jacking and axle stands plus showing the actual clips etc. Think that would be useful.

we did jack the car to steer whitout load of car weight. car didnt run. we simply unplugged one of connections which is inlet to new reservoil cap and leaved old reservoil to its place whit outlet plug and filled new reserv whit new pas fluid and then turned wheels right and left until old reserv is full and sucked them way. and ofc avoidin to not let air into system by keeping new reserv whit fluid. did you understand what i mean Smile. this way in finland

Ok. Did the job this morning. Very straight forward although it'd be nice if they gave you a little more slack in the pipes Smile

The steering doesn't feel much lighter to be honest although the oil was pretty dirty so at least it is now using nice clean stuff. Maybe my steering is normal after all.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Pity that Big Cry .
I had to do mine twice in the same morning before it made a difference. Don't think I flushed it enough the first time. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

I flushed it until the stuff coming out was clear green, not the dark mucky stuff at the start. I assume that was enough of a flush.

Quick question - what's the best stuff to remove power steering fluid? Got a few drips on a couple of points (not the belts). Soapy water/cloth?

Further to changing the filter and fluid (see page 3 of this post) the noise got worse. Can only assume the pump was running more freely.
With only minimal movement of the fluid in the filter I sort a second opinion.

After taking the belt off there was a lot of end float on the pump. Not sure how much is normal so we decided to change it.

So £435 poorer its all good news and the noise completely gone. Hopefully as I had no ill effects with the rack Ive got away with it.

I will be keeping an eye on the filter and changing the fluid as I see fit.

Thanks for all the posts on here that helped trace the noise, hope this will help others Thumbs Up
