SOLVED!! 08 HSE braking clunking noise

When I brake I get a pretty loud 'clack' noise from the front right underside of the vehicle. I've had it on the ramp and checked pads, calliper, strut, joints, bushes, roll bar plus links, radius arms, exhaust and mountings, wishbones, ball joints but all to no avail and I can seem to duplicate it when up in the air.

As I say, it's really noticeable in town when you brake, you can easily hear this noise, it's not a clunk, click, rattle or squeak but a harsh metallic 'clack' kind of noise, as if there's a loose bolt somewhere, sometimes if you have to brake suddenly, I get a similar but softer noise on the rebound when letting go of the brakes. It doesn't seem to be anything obvious, that why I turn to you guys in case you've had this yourselves!? Thanks for any advice. Sad

Possibly the brake lining material separated from the metal backing?

Good call. I fitted new genuine pads and discs not so long ago but I'll definitely check it out. Thanks

Had the same noise on my d3
I had a separated pad from the backing plate
I think taztastic is right
Pull out the pads and check

If it's not this it could be a bush on the suspension that gives way under load and clicks back into its seat out of load
Should be an easy fix but my monies on the pads, pad shims or caliper making the click you describe - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement

If my wife ever sells my stuff for what I told her I paid for it, there will be some bargains out there!

SOLVED!! I took your advice, stripped out the RH calliper and pads, there was nothing wrong with them so I cleaned it all up and lightly greased the backplate points that contact the calliper housing and on the rear of the pads and reassembled. It's perfect now! I can only assume that when the brakes were applied, one or both pads were sticking and then releasing, causing the clacking sound.

Thanks to all, great help! Thumbs Up

Definitely Very Happy and it makes up for the circa £800 quid to fix the front windscreen washers! Dealer says it needs a new fuse box... Haven't had time to really dig into it myself but I cant accept that kind of costs to get water up on the screen!! Where to LR think we get our money from... Big Cry
