As my last post was 2011 I am overdue some contribution.
My rear door failed to central lock a few weeks back and I have been driving around having to manually operate the switch...pain is the ass.
I picked up a new lock from Williams Manchester (£90) strong money! they wanted about £170 to fit it (even stronger money!) all plus VAT of course. So I nominated myself duty mechanic this Saturday, even though the bones are a bit creaky these days.
Thought some of this may help someone make less mistakes than I did.

1) Remove the silver trim from the pull handle (best pull from bottom) then undo the two screws behind.
2) Remove the screw behind the inside door handle and the one on the door pocket LH side.
3) Ease a wide blade screwdriver (in the absence of the specialist tool) behind the door card near the top and gently ease until the first popper releases, slide down to the next popper, they get easier as you go.
4) Disconnect the cable from the lock that appears through the door skin, disconnect the plug from the window switch. You can now put the door card somewhere safe.
5)Remove the speaker (3 screws)
6)Then drop the window half down
7)Release the glass from the regulator by sliding a screwdriver (through the speaker hole) between the nylon clip and carefully parting it, it is shaped into a 'nipple' to go through a hole in the glass. then lift up the glass and use tape over the door to hold it up.
8)Undo the 3 screws holding the control box onto the regulator, unplug the regulator, but leave the box connected to the main loom to avoid programming problems.
9)Undo the 4 bolts holding the regulator and with some twisting you can take it out and put safe.
10) Some say you can replace the lock with the door handle attached, I found this impossible, so undid the external door lock, by undoing the torx screw accessed by pulling the round sticker off the hole on the door.
11)Then remove the small plastic cover on the outside handle, you need to compress a pair of plastic fingers each side (I broke one) show care. Then the handle section is removed by opening out and sliding back with a jerk.
12)Then remove the screw exposed behind the small plastic cover and also pull plastic plug out behind the handle. With some persuasion the door handle back section will 'click out' (study it a bit first)
13)Then you can undo the 3 screws that hold the lock in. This will now come out easy with the external handle components attached. You will need to release the grommet and cable that comes through the door.

Now take it to a table to swap the handle and two cables onto the new lock mechanism. Be careful the silly method the cables are clipped onto the frame is fragile (I broke one end of one).
Cup of tea and then the fun of re-assembly.....enjoy

I changed the rear door lock yesterday, I had been quoted £275+Vat by my local independent, parts were £120+ VAT,God knows what a LR Dealer would have wanted. I bought the new part from Dan at Duckworth for £94 all in, including delivery!! Well pleased with that. I used the Haynes Workshop Manual as a guide but was not impressed with the instructions and pictures, I got the feeling it was for a different year/ model to mine. What was most helpful was Pete's Post above. I also broke some of the stupid plastic clips when trying to dismantle things in spite of being fore warned. I don't think I have the patience and/or skill that I had when younger!! Does anyone know if these items are available to buy separately, or have a parts diagram/list for the door items? It took me about 3 hours mostly releasing the window glass and exterior door handle. removing the speaker for access was a good tip. Just hope the other 3 doors keep working.

What am I looking for to 'compress' ? Had a look at mine today ( 56 ) and I cant see any thing obvious.

What about the main handle ?

Saw a video which showed the outer casing come off but to me looks like a solid piece.
