The DVLA also use white vans with cameras mounted on the roof. They just drive around and anything that is parked on the road and comes up as not taxed gets clamped.
I used to think that the annual routine of getting together insurance and MOT certificate (where needed) was a good thing but with the various computer searchable databases those days have gone. It really is time for vehicle excise duty to be abolished and added to fuel tax. As has been said before, then everyone would pay and in proportion to their use and the pollution caused.

Pollution caused, no sorry, don't agree, some one with a modern say Freelander, won't cause as much pollution as a Series 1 Freelander, yet would pay the same.

The pollution caused, is just based on fuel used and therefore CO2 produced. I agree that a poorly maintained older vehicle is going to produce more pollution (from oil consumed and inefficiencies that go with poor maintenance) than a newer well maintained vehicle and seeing the clouds of carbon that are produced by some vehicles is pretty horrific. As for DPF's, they only burn the carbon so that you don't see it as a cloud of exhaust, the CO2 is still produced. I just don't see how scrapping an old vehicle and replacing it with something newer with all the pollution that producing the new vehicle will have caused is "greener"! That just smacks of consumerism and the god of newer things that people seem to worship nowadays.

Yes, we can all drive a Prius.

Perhaps a fairer tax would be the pollution caused during Production, Shipping and the first 50,000 miles.

CO2 isn't the only problem. The main issue in towns now are NOx (not measured for road tax purposes) and particulates, which is what the DPF is all about. CO2 contributes to global warming, but the other two kill people directly - rather a lot of people actually. There is already talk of banning diesels from big cities for this reason. The annoying thing though is the continual targeting of private cars. OK Oxford Street has the worst pollution in Europe, but the traffic is almost entirely busses, taxis and a few trade vehicles. We get blamed for what is essentially lax regulation on the part of the authorities. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

I saw one at the local curry house ,the other month driveing round their car park , got out and clamped the Bmw 7 series.while the driver was haveing a curry, was not a happy chap , he had to call for police backup (DVLA clamper) as the driver started kicking 7 shades out of his van ,BMW Driver spoke with a strong Irish accent !!!)

can they do that on private propety ??? Dvla clampers I mean .... Wales

Yes they can, if they have reason to believe the car was driven there illegally then they can clamp it.

It's now illegal to have a car even on private land unless it is taxed or SORNed. Safest thing is to do what a lot of Londoners seem to do nowadays and get a set of Latvian plates Whistle Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Why would you get pulled over when e law states from the 1st October that you don't need a disc. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Alas DVLA are less than infallible. I swapped a cherished number, got all the paperwork back but got pulled 2 weeks later by an ANPR car - he looked at my tax disk then looked on his ANPR under the cherished number and was happy that always in order. If I had not had the tax disc I could have had my car confiscated. Would DVLA compensate -not on your life.
The disc is proof of purchase!!

You were very unlucky then and it was for a totally different reason.

If the DVLA state that from the 1st October, you don't need a tax disc, then it's 100% fact that you won't be pulled over for not having one on display. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........
