Considering purchasing a high definition CCTV camera to look over the front of our house. It will cover the doorstep, driveway and path down the side of the drive. I also want good night vision abilities.

The trouble is, there are shed loads on the net that claim to be brilliant but I could do with some recommendations from anyone who has one or knows of one that is good. Will weigh up various price brackets.

Get the best cameras you can afford, the better the camera the better the quality of the pictures, another thing to consider is App Compatibility, I can view ours from anywhere in the world via a Desktop PC or on the IPad or IPhone via an App.

I'm out of the country most weeks and use my iPad to view my CCTV cameras and yes you need a static IP. Some providers allow a static IP at an extra cost and some like mine do not provide this service. If they do not provide one you can go down the same route as me and sign up (free) for a static IP from "no-ip"

Things to bear in mind include...

1. Weather-resistance
2. Ability to record to (eg) microSD card, or to another web-based location
3. In order to remotely monitor images, the need for a static IP address (your ISP should oblige, perhaps for a modest fee)
4. Image quality (esp at night)
5. Do you want the IP cam to be able to pan, tilt etc?
6. Be prepared to spend a decent wodge to get a decent camera
7. The quality/availability of apps to allow you to remotely manage / view
8. If your router / switch supports it, Power over Ethernet is a convenient way of powering the camera

Getting the right recorder is also important. I got mine from a company called CCTV42 who were very helpful in setting up my IP address.

You can use a DDNS (Dynamic DNS) provider to get around the static IP as long as your equipment supports it. (I have a BT Home Hub 2, and it does).

Mine is a 960H DVR the DVR is as important as the camera as the quality of the recording is stored on this system I have a total of 7 cameras on my system and used CAT6 cable to wire them all up, with any camera lighting is important whether it be I.R lighting or normal lighting, Im happy to e mail you some of the night time images off my system to show you the difference if you like... and i can direct you to a place on the bay that sell good cameras (all mine have come from this seller)

I can access my system off my I-PAD I-phone and works PC as well i used a home plug system to connect it up to the network.

I returned a Maplins CCTV system, it was rubbish on outdoor shots. best go to a specialist in CCTV who can give advise on what is most suitable. Just one other thing to watch out for. If it records to DVD should you want to save on that medium (CODEC) then check out what format it uses. The one I had recorded to disc ok but a DVD player would not play it.
Should you want the police to have a DVD copy it has to be in a readable format by their equipment. Oh and have a separate monitor not your computer one Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner
