Called in at Hunters preston today to quiz them why they drill new holes for the number plate fixings and not use the nylon plugs that are fitted I got no joy at all I ended up just walking out .
They said they don't use the original nylon plugs because they are for the larger european number plates so I told him thats why every other dealer fits the larger plate and he just said that the fixing screw ends up on one of the letters , so I told him thats not a problem either use a black cap or paint the yellow ones black like I did but he was addament that they were for european number plates and not UK ones I could see I wasn't getting anywhere so I went .
I noticed all the new cars in there compound had beed drilled

Told him I wasn't happy because it will rust in no time and he just said they don't have a problem with that they have always fitted that way .

The thing is do I stick with them when it's due a service or take it somewhere else and if anything goes wrong with the car do you still get the same service if you haven't bought it there .

Dealers don't like to admit they are wrong - it is likely to cost them money! Anyway, the screws come in any colour.

If you are planning on keeping the car for a while, make contact via this forum with Mike at LRCS, and advise him what has happened. Make sure that he opens a case or at least logs it for you. That way, if it starts to rust, LR themselves have it on record as to what has happened, and the probable cause, so will probably make the Dealer pay for it in the event of a Warranty or Perforation claim in the future. Foraging near Gaydon....

totally sympathise with you. I unfortunately had the miss pleasure of buying my brand new one there last year. In 27 years of motoring i have never had an experience like it. Even complained strongly to the Dealer Principle, Hugh Duckworth who quite frankly didn't give a monkies. Turned out mine hadn't even been PDI'd, let alone washed when handed over to me. All my friends,family and colleagues laughed when they realised i had bought it from Hunters. They all use the dealer in Kendal and all rave about them.

Wish I'd of known that before I ordered it funny thing my mothers next door neighbour only uses kendal LR he can't praise then enough .
The salesman I dealt with was Giles a nice bloke , I didn't use finance I just paid for it I didn't feel like thats what they wanted the bloke I saw today was steve , first time I'd seen him and totally not bothered .

Looks like because it isn't a LR defect if the holes do rust it isn't covered by the warranty and I know Hunters wont do anything about it from their attitude when I went to see them on Sunday

I put a big blob of silicon on the hole and pushed it through so some went inside so should be waterproof I hope but I will check again soon and might stick a thin plastic disc over it .

Andy don't use silicon , use mastic , mastic is flexible and doesn't dry out .

As you say go and enjoy the car , it's a smasher .

Thanks for that will take off the silicon and use some mastic I have a couple of tubes handy
I am enjoying my Freelander I love driving it it's just a nice place to be looking forward to some snow
