Bleeding the fuel system

I have checked through the Manual to see what you do if you run out of fuel, but I cannot see any reference to it. What is the procedure? Question

i don't think the car would actuallty run out of diesel, as such

It will always keep enough in the tubes and pumps due to the high pressure they work under, if they were to run dry they could be damaged.

So, if the car senses that there is not enough fuel, it turns off the engine, so one you have put in the jerry can of diesel you "Should" be able to start like normal. Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Nice fact, it's good to know in case Mrs Tunaz ever runs out which is entirely feasible as every time I use her car it's in the red!!

AHH a subject close to my heart.

I ran out of fuel at the pumps at my local Asda. There was I with a full tank of fuel and it would not start regardless of how hard I tried. The solution call landrover assist. Technician arrived relatively quickly and spent an hour with his hand pump trying to get fuel op to the engine, he told me that Land Rover have removed the electric pump from the tank so the cars cannot self bleed. After and hour of waiting eventually conceeded defeat and called for a recovery truck to take to the dealer. Moral of the story make sure you do not run low on fuel but in my case have a new fuel tank and sender unit fitted to ensure the guage and computer give reasonable information.

Shocked i sure it should have turned off prior to running out of fuel, sounds like they was right to replace the parts to make sure it doesn't happen again Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

On another post someone mentioned in passing that there is a bleed screw on the fuel filter, which is located on the front RH side of the engine compartment.

It is night here and I cannot check the car. Does anyone know anything about this?

I looked earlier, no sign of a fuel filter at front right of engine? where is it?
The manual says add at least 8l of diesel before restarting the car, It also advises seeking technical assistance Question

but normally cranking the engine and/or loosening the bleed screw on the filter does the trick with most cars At work

When the technician came out to my car he clipped and unclipped pipes all over the place. I remeber a Ford D series lorry that I owned had a hand pump and a bleed valve on the fuel filter to bleed the system but nothing on this. The technician did say that the reason the hand pump was so in effective is because of the number of valves between the tank and the engine bay.

I think we should all make sure that we don't run low on fuel or else carry an electric pump to shift the fuel through the system when you do.

Let's give this another run.

I cannot get a clear answer from Land Rover in Australia.

Has anyone run out of diesel, then filled the tank and had the system self bleed and start?

Fuel filter TD4

Does anyone know where the fuel filter / seperater is hidden in the TD4, also the pollen filter. My X-TRAIL, gone thank goodness, needed its fuel filter changed every 15K or engine would revert to reduced power mode.
