Update

Dropped the truck off and the dealer had it today, said hes driven it around all over the place and didn't hear any random noises ( oh what a shocker ) He has said if I take it somewhere else and they find fault with the rear diff then they will get it sorted but I have to pay at my own expense for a second opinion. So im guessing I will need to book it into a proper landrover place and let them drive it / poke around for £100 plus vat an hour of the fun Rolling Eyes I think the only local place to me really is guy salmon landrover so guessing it will have to go there hmm

Any thoughts to cheaper ways of proving the diff bearings are shot? Kind of thinking his not so deep pockets are swaying his lack of hearing the diff noise! Whistle

Cheers

Edit : forgot to add that when the log book come through I did wonder why the last owner only had the truck for about 7 months, maybe they new the diff was shot and wanted out of the truck rather than stump up the money to fix it hmm Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

Take it to a LR Dealer, ask them what they think, can't see that they will bill you just for an opinion, if they strip it out then yes.

Tapping isn't going to be DMF with an auto!
If you're in Hampshire and looking for an independent who's reliable, try Keith Gott near Lasham/Alton - not sure where exactly you are but may be of help.

Sorry Peter, only just noticed your post. The indy I use is Parkside garage in Huddersfield. Mick Leech is the owner, apprenticed trained LR mechanic. Prices seem reasonable. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Update

Evening all. Got a new update from today

Took the truck into Guy Salmon Land Rover Portsmouth, spoke to a very nice man Kevin Flower to which I told him the problems and he went off and got one of them service guys who come out for a drive in the truck to hear any problems, low and behold as soon as we got upto 30mph he said yes I can hear the rear diff, we chatted on the rest of the drive and did all different speed and his out come is rear diff bearings and pinion Bow down Went back into the dealer ship and chatted to Kevin again and chatted about a few things. Very helpful guy Thumbs Up

Long story short, on the way home went into the car dealers I got the truck from and told the guy, I got the second opinion you told me to get and Guy Salmon LandRover have told me that yes its the rear diff. Then I had loads of back tracking and oh they only want the work and blah blah blah, we arnt going to fix the diff as its working fine, blah blah blah, I wont my guys to check it again blah blah blah lol to which I said, whats they point when land rover them selfs are telling me what the problem is.

Guy Salmon didn't charge me anything to have alook at the truck which I was very greatful for and well done to them indeed, but now im going to be booking the truck in propley and have them look at it again and over the rest of the truck and get a full report on the truck rather than just the diff Thumbs Up

Any other thoughts would be ace or input would be great

Many thanks

Hi,
We got a F2 from Sparshits in Fareham last year and your story almost mimics ours, used Guy Salmon to diagnose properly after Sparshits did the "we can't hear anything, must be the tyres" how they drive with their fingers in their ears escapes me, but then the Sales Manager admitted he knew little about cars as he only sold them! Shocked , eventually after booking it in for a full check with Salmon's, charge was very reasonable and checked everything, long story short is that Sparshits agreed to repair the diff, didn't tell us they outsource this etc, we do it ourselves and your car will be safely in our workshop the whole time, but they actually use a transmission specialist in Fareham, Briggs Motors, they are excellent and if you go direct very reasonable.

All I can suggest is either return the car for refund as "not fit for purpose" or get your dealer to speak to Briggs Motors about it, other than that you can get it repaired, bite the bullet and try to sue your dealer for the cost, one thing to bear in mind is that once we got ours back we could still hear the noise, not at the same level but still droning away, swapping the tyres got rid of it finally.

Thanks for the comments Tigger Rover Thumbs Up

The truck went into guy salmons yesterday and a report has been printed of the rear diff has a fault which we kind of new but now its in writing from a main landrover dealer. The good news is they didn't find anything else wrong with the truck Smile

Total repair bill from them, is £611 ( from what I can recall reading on the paperwork ) So not £1000s

Cost to book the truck in and for report £102 so not to bad either. Now just got to drop off the report to the dealer and see what guff I get back from him this time Neutral

Cheers

Hi again

Another update of sorts, as suspected the dearler tried slating Guy Salmon again, and put forward a half arsed plan, which entailed me to pay £250 towards the repair! to which NO has been said as its still under full warranty.

It appears after talks that the bearing at fault is not the middle part but an outa bearing ( out put bearing? ) that the rear left half shaft goes into. But I fear to replace this the rear diff would have to be fully taken apart? Or could the diff be left in tacted and the bearing pulled out and pressed back in with out striping the diff fully?

Sorry if this is not explained very well, we have come from defenders and replaced all bearings and diffs on them are selfs, but not sure how the freelander 2 one looks or strips down to understand it fully.

Thanks

The diff halfshaft bearing can be replaced without removing the diff but methinks they are grasping at straws. My guess is after they have done it it will still be noisy and eventually the diff will have to be done. John

Hi again guys

After a very long time, and fobin off from the dealer I ended up going legal and funny anoth the dealer decided to just get it fixed all of a sodden Yawn

Any ways long story short it was ment to be away Monday and Tuesday but shockingly I didn't get the truck back till late Friday Shocked On a good note so far after a few short trips cant seem to hear anything other than I think tire noise and wind noise Thumbs Up

The dealer did admit that all the bearings were on there away out so he had the lot replaced... The place he used were Southampton gearboxes and axels, with a bill to around £500

Will wait and see how it goes and if it all holds together Smile

Cheers

Meeting with my familys and dads business solicitors, they were very happy to take the case on and were ready to send the first point of contact out to the dealer which was set for the day after but after telling the dealer I was seeking legal action he decided to get it fixed ( funny that ) After a meeting with them within 5 minutes they had shown a number of ways the case would get resolved Thumbs Up Just waiting to see how the truck is and if any other problems pop up with the diff and or the rest of the truck, as if something else goes wrong I have already told them they can handle everything on my behalf.

All I had to do is print off everything, texts, emails, logs of every time I went into the dealers, and some accounts of verbal convos, all truck details, from buying to this day, how many miles it had covered and so on. They still retain all this info incase anything else goes wrong, as to move on in resolving a problem in the future Smile
