Hi, Absolute newbie/novice here,
Hoping that somebody can point us in the right direction, We have just bought a second hand FL2 06 2.2SE TD4, The car drives fantastic, tho after driving it a couple of days we have noticed that the turbo whistle is quite loud on acceleration (which to me sounds normal). But when you stop accelerating to change gear (more noticeable in low gears) their seems to be a lot of what i can only describe as what sounds like a dump valve what you would hear on a Subaru! it does not make this juddery air release sound every time, but whilst the car is only a few days old from the dealer we bought it off, im trying to identify the problem before having to make the long journey back to where we bought the car from, then be without a car for x many days. The car turbo appears to have no lag, and seems to be working fine, is this sound normal or is their a known problem on these cars? We are considering taking it to our local dealership to let them diagnose the problem (if their is one) but im very wary that they will just come back and say it requires a new turbo, just to increase their turnover!! please if anybody could help,it would be appreciated. please note im no expert on car engines etc, i just like to drive them

If it's just the normal turbo whistle noise, I had the same problem with my SD4-it really annoyed me but the dealer said there was nothing wrong. So I cut a small section of copper pipe insulation (22mm I think), cut it open where the slit is, wrapped it round the bottom of the steering column where it goes through the carpet and pushed it down a little.

I may be mistaken but I seem to remember that the steering column grommet/seal can become displaced allowing the driver to hear the turbo whine. Refitting it correctly (or adding extra sound insulation as described above) cures the problem. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

When I first posted about this it was believed that there was a replacement grommet which was available but my dealer denied all knowledge if this so I decided to fix it myself.
Not only did it cure the turbo noise but it also reduced the overall engine noise in the cabin.

Hope someone can help me, I have attached a few photo's from inside the bulkhead where steering column is, not sure if something missing not, as I have not got access to another Freelander 2 to check, but I do have a bit of turbo noise and it was mentioned there might be a missing grommet or something. Thanks in advance.

OOOO my specialist subject... Its not the same problem that PLAGUED me (LOL- as everyone who went to Halewood knows about) This vehicle is too old.
Good luck getting to the bottom of it. I hope its a quick inexpensive fix for you.

I think it looks like something could be missing as there are 2 little rubber flaps that might hold something in place. Hopefully I will get to look at another one to compare it one day.

Hi all hope somebody can help me regarding some turbo noise I was having, following up from my last post, inside the cab under the drivers footwell I thought there might be something missing that could cause the noise entering the cab but had no feed back, so had a minute tonight to look from underneath to check the boot was in place as in photo below.




Which is securely in place but noticed a bit of oil around what looks like an air intake into the turbo as in photo's below







Does this look normal ish or should it be looked at properly.

I appreciate any feed back
