my first question on the forum. I have tried a search without much success, and I hope it is the right sub-forum. If not apologies in advance.

I am looking at the build your car function on LR website and notice an option of a stainless steel undertray.
How does this compare to the standard fitment? Is that plastic or painted metal?

So does the S/S item add any protection or is it just cosmetic?

its plastic ! I just ripped the front of it 2 hours ago against a small tree stump sticking out from the dirt.
I ripped open the plastic just behind the front tow eye ( a rip of about 2 inches). I wasn't even going fast I was crawling in 1st gear.
its thick plastic.. but plastic it is !

just hope there is no damage behind it !

So plastic like the FL1.

I think there was an update/facelift for the 2011MY (?)

Maybe the undertray changed from plastic to metal at that time?

I am aware of Mantec products. What I was wondering was whether the stainless undertray option is purely a cosmetic "enhancement" (depending on personal opinion) or whether it is designed to give some element of protection over the standard fitment (but not necessarily to the same level as a Mantec etc).

If the standard fitment is plastic, then the stainless might give "some" improvement.
If the standard fitment is painted metal, then the stainless is probably not going to add anything?

I believe there may be some misunderstanding here. The "towing eye cover" on the underside of the bumper is grey or black plastic, also available as a "Stainless Steel" option (which is plastic!). The standard engine undertray is steel, which is light enough to be taken off easily by one guy. The only alternative for this, as far as I am aware, is the Mantec undertray/sump guard, which is built like a brick khazi.

I think you might be right, and it could be my fault. Just found the item I am talking about on LR website and I should have called it an undershield. VPLFT0004

For that money I should hope it's the under shield and the towing eye cover. I think it's just a shiny version of the standard one. If you are after underbody protection I think the only after market one is the fuel tank guard. 2020 Defender D200 110S Pangea Green

I am not particularly looking for protection (yet ). It's just that when going through the "build your car" process on LR website this is offered as an option, and I was curious as to whether it is just cosmetic bling or whether it actually added anything in the way of protection.

Well that definitely sounds like a situation best avoided  Currently a FL1 owner.
