Bearing or gear noise from Freelander 2

Hi

We are new to this and are hoping that someone out there may be able to help!!!!

We have a Freelander 2 td4hse on 57 plate and have been experiencing a bearing or gear noise from the back end of the vehicle when we are on the motorway at high speeds. It has been in to Land Rover twice - first they said it was the some bearing on the differential which they replaced, but that made no difference. Second time they said it was the air con compressor - which we haven't had done because they appear not to know what the problem is and are just guessing!!! At our expense Sad

Can anyone help - please Very Happy

Many thanks

rear diff bearing or even a wheel bearing or if your very lucky an unbalanced wheel When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

I'd be tempted to say a wheel bearing , my wife's FL2 had a brand new diff & haldex before we bought it , there is still a slight droning noise from the n/s/r , the local land rover specialist had it on the ramp this morning and listened with a stephascope and couldn't hear any difference in either rear wheels . But on the road on a smooth surface it was noticeable . Could an unbalanced/missing weight cause this too ? It's going in next week to be sorted so I'll keep you posted .

Mark

If its the rear diff doesn't it get really loud and noisy over a short period of time? Mine has a humming noise, not too loud that starts about 50 mph. It's always done this over the 15 months I've had the car. It went away briefly when I changed all 4 tyres then came back after a couple of weeks. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

When I had my rear diff pinion bearing done because it started making a noise, (from no noise to extremely noisy in 300 miles) the LR garage mechanic said if the bearing isnt replaced prompty once the noise starts it could eventually affect the pinion to crown wheel meshing and cause gear teeth wear, if this happens then just replacing the pinion bearing wont get rid of the noise?

Mine did this & the dealer replaced the diff nose bearing but it didn't cure it. It went back again & they said it was tyre noise. Definitely sounded like a wheel bearing to me. It made a grinding sort of noise at just under 30 mph & between 50 & 60 mph.

I never did find out what it was as I changed the car. Not much help to you really, sorry. Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!

Thanks for all your feedback.
Rear diff bearing has been changed but no made difference. Also we can hear the noise at slower speeds as long as the roads are smooth (not many of those around nowadays!!!!).

Not too sure if the air con being on or off makes a difference. The noise is coming from the back of the car!

Just a different 'take' on this. About 20,000 miles ago my car started 'droning' from the rear and when others were having diff problems I got a bit paranoid.
It was worse at about 25-40 mph and would then disappear, by chance I changed my wheels/tyres from 17" Wranglers to 18" Pirelli's and was amazed how quiet the ride was. I can only put it down to the part worn Wranglers as it wasn't present from new.

Now at 40,000 miles and still quiet.

My Freelander 2 has just started making a loud humming/droning noise from the rear, most pronounced above 50mph. Its related to road speed not revs / gear. Don't hear it at all below 30 quite bearable from 30-50.

We've just had to change the throttle motor (local garage did it) and have noticed this since getting the car back... but not sure how it could be related.

Have read various posts suggesting tyres (unlikely), rear bearings (not noticing any difference in noise when cornering) and Rear Diff. The latter sounds expensive.

It's getting Part-Exed in about 2-3 weeks. If it is something expensive like rear diff, can I get away with driving carefully / slowly for a few weeks? Or is this an urgent fix?

Thanks in advance for any advice offered.

I was convinced I had a shot bearing. Two new rear tyres and it's gone completely. Have you got Wranglers ? I was doubtful before the tyre change as it sounded so mechanical. - 2007(57) XS Auto, Rimini Red, Alpaca Leather.

I just had a >60mph whine from the rear fixed. It was the rear diff bearing. This is what mine sounded like:

My rear WB went and it made similar noises to the above. Thought it was diff so was delighted to find it was only a new bearing.

Getting a humming noise from rear of vehicle at most speeds, noticeable when slowing down or accelerating. Renewed both rear wheel bearings but noise still present and seems to be getting worse. How will know if the diff is the problem or something worse.
