Freel2 2010 reliable ?

Hi all,

I'm buying a freel2 2010 , then I want to know if the problems of heavy/ whiney steering and rear differential/Haldex have been resolved or still affect these vintages.
also what is the difference between Td4 and SD4?
engines are Land Rover or BMW?
thank you

Giacomo

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

Pre-2011 Model Year which went on sale in September 2010 the TD4 engine was 160 bhp.
After the change to 2011 Model Year the TD4 engine went to 150bhp and the SD4 was introduced with 190bhp.
The engine is a Peugeot/Ford engine currently built by Ford.

Steering problems only really affected earlier models and by 2010 were pretty much a thing of the past. Rear differntial/Haldex problems can still be found in later models but I'd expect that if there was a problem in a 2010 vehicle it should have appeared and been fixed by now.

The steering problem seems to have been resolved on the 2010 models.
Haldex still rears its head along with Diff Bearings.
TD4 to SD4, SD4 only available with an Auto Box, slight different Turbo but basically it is different mapping, nice though Thumbs Up

The engine in all diesel Freelander 2's has always been made in Dagenham by Ford.

1. Steering - largely fixed by the time the 2010 model arrived
2. Rear diff/Haldex - still issues but not so frequent (I have just had a software fix on mine)
3. TD4 is 160 HP for 2010 models. Later models offered 2 engines - TD4 @ 150 HP and SD4 @ 190HP
4. Engines are PSA - a product of cooperation between Ford/Peugeot/Citroen. BMW engines were in Freelander 1 only.

thanks you all,
, you are really technically trained
but how do I distinguish the problem of rear differential bearings from that of Haldex?

Rear diff bearing will give a "whine" - so loud you need the radio on!

The Haldex (which is an electronic controlled multi-plate clutch unit) can give functional problems. The best known is when it "locks" and forces rear tyre scrub/judder when turning in a tight circle. Can also give occasional tyre judder in a straight line with front/rear tyres of different wear depths. Can also give dashboard warnings of "Traction Control Fault". Do not be alarmed - these are not frequent problems but they can happen.

Mine is 2010 plate but MY2011 with 35,000 miles.
I have had haldex fixed twice and bearings fixed once. Don't let it put you off, I am just unlucky and it must have been a 'Friday afternoon car'. Others will say they have older cars with no problems at all so it's just a matter of luck. Still love Freelanders and looking for a new one. Thumbs Up
