Make sure the diff is still bolted in place ! I gather they are rather sought after now and thieves will help them selves to anything.
Over the years I have never been shocked as to how much stuff is stolen from cars or been attempted to be removed whilst on a drive way or car park

Engines, gearboxes, bumpers, lights , doors - sunroofs, Air bags is a common one ! exhaust systems & rear axles Bonnets etc etc Jaguar x-type sport gone
Jaguar x-type 2.2d sport one of my best cars ever sadly gone

all still there, only thing different is that when before i could rotate the drive shaft about an inch side to side by hand, it now has no movement at all unless i put loads of pressure on it.

one more bit of info / symptom. It feels like the rear left wheel, could be both though, is activating the ABS all the time. That's what it feels like to drive, really weird.

any ideas? Big Cry

I've jacked both wheels off the ground. They spon freely and there's no noise from the diff or anything. Would this be the case if it was the diff or haldex?

In the spirit of hoping it's something cheap, i had the delaminated hand brake shoe issue recently. Could be that as the sound was nasty.

I love your optimism, and thank you.

Today I literally laid in the boot, videoing under the car as my wife drove up the road, frightening isn't the word.
Anyway, it's coming from the diff haldex area. It's like a creek noise, weird.

I've sucked out and replaced the diff oil, 2 tiny black filings but nothing I'd call out of the ordinary for a car with 116,000 miles.

I'm now leaning towards the haldex. But what would it be the pump?

Ok, another option but at the front of the car. My aircon is starting to get noisy. Turning that off cured that noise until I get it re-gassed.

Friend had a disco 2 with an clonking aircon pump that sounded like the transfer box was eating itself.

Fingers crossed for a simpler solution.

What was the diagnosis of this problem in the end? Was it down to excess ale and hot curry?
