If I had to make a guess I would say possibly cv joint failure

Make sure the diff is still bolted in place ! I gather they are rather sought after now and thieves will help them selves to anything.

all still there, only thing different is that when before i could rotate the drive shaft about an inch side to side by hand, it now has no movement at all unless i put loads of pressure on it. |

one more bit of info / symptom. It feels like the rear left wheel, could be both though, is activating the ABS all the time. That's what it feels like to drive, really weird.

I've jacked both wheels off the ground. They spon freely and there's no noise from the diff or anything. Would this be the case if it was the diff or haldex? |

In the spirit of hoping it's something cheap, i had the delaminated hand brake shoe issue recently. Could be that as the sound was nasty. |

Ok, another option but at the front of the car. My aircon is starting to get noisy. Turning that off cured that noise until I get it re-gassed.

What was the diagnosis of this problem in the end? Was it down to excess ale and hot curry? |
