I would reccomend having the handbrake serviced before MOT; its the hidden Achilles heel .
.
We all have a good start with our Freelanders because of the high ground clearance which keeps the underside well clear of road salts and muck ; AND its made in England from best quality raw materials. You should hear my local MOT examiner talk on Pacific Rim cars and there premature corrosion and my local Bodyshop man talk about trying to weld body panels on Pacific rim cars.
.
Good luck with your MOT, regards from Fred.

Mine passed no problems last year on its first MOT. The hand brake was a problem so when serviced a couple of weeks before the MOT the indy guy I use stripped down the hand brake and adjusted it, I don't think it would have passed if not.

Car is in next Tuesday for service and MOT, i'll check it over for obvious faults tomorrow ie lights, wiper blades etc. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Unfortunately with the bold headline about cars most likely to fail, they put the Freelie picture underneath Banging Head

I don't understand the reasons for rejections "items not tested 0.6%"? Is that something that is so obvious it doesn't have to be tested?? Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

There's things like bulbs. One example is indicator bulbs, they loose the orange opacity or some go silvery pearlescent . Wiper blades are a fail if the ends show cracks. 2011 onwards have red painted brake/rear light bulbs; same problem.
.
Back to handbrakes the usual culprit is a tiny pivot pin that siezes because its never seen lubricant. Garages usually replace it with a new link assembly - and guess what - that's equally dry of lube and rusts up two years later! Better have the original freed up cleaned and greased.
.
My 2010 GS has now passed 2 MOT's first go. This time round I fitted new wiper blades., new indicator bulbs and serviced the handbrake.
.
As I have said before the Freely is a good bet at MOT time.
.
Kind regards from Fred.

With my hand brake the Indy guy told me it just needed adjusting. He said by the looks of it it had never been adjusted before. The Indy is an LR apprentice trained mechanic, while talking hand brakes with him he said that he has rarely had to change hand brake shoes, usually a clean and adjustment is fine. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

He's fundamentally right. The handbrake design is a motor industry standard that has been used by many motor manufacturers. I ran Vauxhall Carltons and Omegas for many many years and serviced other people's as well. They are the same handbrake and in all those years I never ever fitted new handbrake shoes; just the thorough clean and adjust, (having freed and greased both the adjuster and link assembly when first done).
.
It makes me cringe every time somebody reports having been told they need new discs, pads and shoes. It's a license to make money!
.
Kind regards from Fred

That's when we abandon a test after it had started. That could be for reasons that it may be unsafe to continue the test (low engine oil preventing an smoke/emission test for example) or we may not be able to open a door, bonnet or boot to check other items or the back may be full up with stuff preventing inspection of seats or belts etc. Still have to charge for the test in those cases and fail for the stated reason. I thought most dealers did an MOT with the last service, should that be the case there would be very few failures if any. It was a Hyundai dealer trying to pull a fast one on the last service/MOT that made me decide I needed to find a car that had a dealer with a more ethical regard to customer service. One wonders how headlights should suddenly need adjusting in a car serviced by them from new as they were high, requiring 1/2hr labour, one week after the service/MOT I had an HSE. I would certainly bee looking at a new dealer should any of my cars fail its first MOT my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Is thee much work involved in adjusting headlights? The works van failed on headlight aim and an indicator bulb being out. I had changed a main beam bulb before the test which involved removing the headlight so the aim could have been out. The MOT garaged adjusted the headlight aim free of charge, even the indicator bulb was replaced and I was only charged 2 quid on top of the test fee. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

if everyone had them serviced at the same time as an MOT test they would all pass first time. Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Cracked windscreen, wipers and or washers not working, sun visor that won't stay in the upright position, rear view mirrors missing (must have drivers door mirror plus either passenger or interior mirror), bonnet not locking shut. Thumbs Up Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
