FL2 Harsh Engine noise.

Diesel Td4 2008 Auto. I have a harsh engine noise under load when accelerating up hill or when I put my foot down hard. not noticeable when stationary even at full throttle. It sounds like a bearing failing somewhere. Performance is normal. I know this may not be enough to go on, but does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

what does a harsh noise sound like?

metal rubbing on metal?
sucking?
rattling etc?

Thanks for your reply. A Metallic sort of noise. I thought maybe a water pump failing or something. There is no smoke from exhaust so I'm thinking it's not turbo related. There is no loss of water.

i just have a harsh noise when under load, turned out to be a turbo hose, which was temp fixed by LRA till my car is at the dealers this week

virtually dead centre, front of the engine and down behind the radiator fans, about 3" thick

This hole/split gave off a harsh sound, like metal on metal, worth a look first of all Idea

Thanks Npinks, I'll have a look at that. It's definitely a metallic sort of sound.

I thought mine was too worth a look as you say

Other things could be throttle body rattling, obviously belts and bearings or power steering

Auxiliary belt tensioner is another possibility. Makes a sound a bit like a dying steering pump, only worse. Dealer said they had never heard a noise like it before. It was NOT covered on the LR extended warranty Sad .
That was on a MY07.

LR technician who diagnosed partially seized aux belt tensioner on mine had me put the aircon on, heating front and rear screens etc, noise only occured when turning on full lock.

Could the noise be rear diff related? Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black

Could it be a driveshaft rubbing on a heat shield or other bit of metal as a result of the engine moving on its mountings due to the load on the engine? Worn engine mountings could result in reduced clearances. Does it relate to engine speed or road speed?

I took my vehicle into my Tech mate and he found the split turbo hose in about 2 minutes! Apparently it seems to be a complete hose assembly (LR002589) but it's just the short hose at the top end of the of the intercooler to turbo hose. It's about £63 Plus VAT. I'm not sure if the short hose is available seperately. Thanks to all for the advice.

The pipe turned out to be a complete assembly as suspected. Fitting was not as straight forward as I had hoped. There are 3 sections of pipe and I replaced the top two only. In order to get to the support clip and fixing on the lower hose the whole front bumper needs to be removed. As it looked a bit like heavy rain was approaching, it was easier to separate the assembly and leave the bottom hose in place.

I hope this information may be useful to anyone with this sort of problem.
