Starting off from the works car park tonight I noticed a strange noise from what seemed to be under the car, sounded like a band saw cutting metal (no I hadn't been drinking). Pulled over when I could (about half a mile) and had a look underneath but couldn't see anything wrong. Got back in an carried on and haven't heard anything since. Car runs perfect, no noise whatsoever (as you would expect for only 8400 miles). Electric handbrake engages and disengages OK, an no brake noise. I'm at a loss.

Heat shield rubbing on a drive shaft? Happened to me and drove me mad until I sorted it. |

could be the exhaust heat deflector shield rubbing on the propshaft, used to be a very common complaint, easy sorted, just bend it back into place |

Oooo - can you expand on that.... I ask because I'm trying to track some noise down my self and all the bottom was done a little while back for the rear oil seal.....

There is an alloy heatshield that runs very close to the propshaft. If it rubs you get a rubbing sound that is relative to road speed/propshaft speed. Just look under the car at the big pipe that joins the engine to the rear axle and check that the shield that runs close to it isn't touching it. On mine it was at the forward end due to some serious wading. |

In the time since I posted the original message I wondered if anyone had problems with such noises (described as a plastic bucket stuck under the car). Mine has been parked up for nearly three weeks while on holiday (Electronic Park Brake Off) and made the noise again when I drove it out of the garage on my return home but only for a few yards. Cannot reproduce the noise now. Wondered if it was a Haldex issue?

Had something similar on my previous FL2 - turned out to be handbrake rubbing as adjustment had failed. I know one poster said handbrake had been left off but maybe 'regular' brake? Just a suggestion but very like the sound mine made. 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

I had a similar problem,......I drive on gravel tracks in winter a lot,..there were small stones trapped between or on the heat shield underneath,......rattles like a bag of spaners only on start up..and close down. Current: Freelander 2 GS, Orkney Grey, Factory fit privacy glass, design pack and Clearview pack. Almond Leather ,rear spoiler, rear mudflaps.my13.
