Hi All,

My car has done 188,888 miles (07 plate HSE) and I'm about to embark on another expensive repair bill so I thought I'd put together the larger expense items I've came across thus far. I would also like people to add there big cost items to the list so perhaps I can see if its worth soldiering on with this car as i've now replaced the vast majority or whether I need to take out a second mortgage as I've not come across a host of known expensive faults and therefore might want to cut my losses.
When the car is working it drives great and is a cracking car, its just the not knowing when I jump in if i'm going to hear another whine, groan, low hum or rattle that's about to cost me another small fortune that is getting me down.

So far...

1. New rear diff bearing
2. New Rear diff (6 months later) different fault apparently!
3. New Turbo
4. New rear brake calipers (both had seized)
5. and now either a new power steering rack or new pump.

what else am I missing?


Smaller faults

Rear wiper motor
Rear number plate light.
Air con electrics chafed in engine bay and stopped working - took a visit to a 3rd LR dealer to find it! first two couldn't find the fault and gave up!

Oh, on going fault which I can't get a garage to fix/find is that the car struggles to start in the cold (zero and below). I've had the glow plugs replaced and a new battery still no success. The car waits for the plugs to heat up before trying to turn the engine over but it doesn't like "catching" and bursting into life. Its been like this for the last 70K!

Mine 2007 year model, 160tkm drived.
- Differential ( reconditioned ) i have bought.
- one caliper seized but i managed to lubricate it?
- Wiper motor
- tiny hole on AC condencer, bill for new was 400euros + job., and they used some ford galaxys ac to replace it
- 4x rear right bearing in one year, dealer didnt get it right in...
- Front right inner pdc sensor broken, cost 300euros for replace and paint

Now

Front right outer sensor broken, whole PDC system rear and front is offline because of one broken sensor!. BEEPS ALLWAYS in startup! IS IT possible to take front sensor system away? just unplug?!? please help me whit this, i have read that its possible to take front pdc from ecu away? but where is the ecu?


- Glow plugs, it wont glow long, maybe 1-2 seconds in -16 in finland, didnt start.... Dunno how huge bill it will be by checking the fault of this? i dont think its the plugs, some times it glows and some times not, but the time is SO short!! dont know why!
it will start cranking, no delay. ( Any idea where is this ) Fault Symptoms: No operation of glow plugs Poor starting when cold, rough running in extreme cold conditions. Fault Diagnosis and Rectification:
Glow plug relay excess temperature Carry out pinpoint tests
associated with DTC where is this relay on the hood?
- Some noise front suspension when car has been standing for while in cold.
- some noise left front wheel when turning hard to right, sound like klikliklik but now its gone?
- Rear left and right front central locking motor didnt lock but now it works? dont know what was faulty, i have to keep watching..

Thats 303 thousand klms, I would suspect many many cars would have significantly more issues than you have mentioned at that distance. Overall if it was my vechicle I would be extremly Happy. The moon is only 384,403 km from earth so you are nearly there.

No no no! europe, finland! not miles. its kilometers. 160000 kilometers now and these symptoms start at 98000, i bought car at 96000, quick calculate all symptoms between 98-140000

The OP is approaching 303,000 km, and at that kind of distance I think Tea Gardens is right - that list of faults doesn't look bad at all.

As for what else might go wrong, I suppose there's the Haldex, plus the things you might expect at that kind of mileage, like wheel bearings and suspension bushes.

That's not bad, If you add up the rough costs of the original post's major repair bills it works out to repair costs of 1p per mile!
It looks scary in the original list but when you think about it as 1p a mile it doesn't sound quite so bad. Makes the old 'warranty worth it?' debate rear its ugly head again!

Average annual mileage in the UK is, I believe, somewhere between 10,000 and 12,000, so 188,000 miles is well over 15 years for the average UK motorist! Just to give it another perspective.

I had a weird dream last night that my alternator was on its way out and paid £360 to have it repaired, then realised that it was a warranty item, but they refuse to pay because it had already been done.

Must have land rovers on my brain! haha

Mine is a 58 2.2td4.
Bought it 18 months ago with 62k on the clock, on a 58 plate. Since then covered around 10k.
New battery. Front drivers side wheel bearing/hub. Set front pads & disc's (normal serviciable items).
Other small cost items. Landy has now gone.

Trouble is..... I had a volvo 850 2.5 TDI Est prior to the Freelander 2 and it managed 243K before anything major cropped up (started to leak PW oil and the shockers had all gone).

I guess I might have been spoilt some what by that car. The only reason I changed it rather than repaired it is I moved to Scotland and 2 ton of front wheel drive car with fat tyres is crap in the snow, especially if you've had it lowered

yeh some cars go on really well to high mileage without serious issue. These aren't the majority though. My first Vauxhall astra had tons of problems, My dad's Vauxhall is on 90,000 and has had ECU problems, leaks oil and needs some cylinder work or something, my previous Focus had a sticky brake calliper, knocking noise every time you changed gear (This was a 3 year old car), the one before that was burning oil and the ECU/electrical system malfunctioned so catastrophically that it couldn't be repaired without replacing the whole wiring loom and dashboard instruments. The ford before that had a power steering leak. These were all under 100,000 miles so Yes the Freelander isn't fantastic, its certainly not horrific. If you use an independent specialist most problems aren't too expensive to repair.

I also own an old Disco the Land Rover Site I frequent here in Australia recently had a thread regarding the vehicle with the highest mileage, the winner was:

"My Discovery 1 TDI passed 1,000,000 km back in Feb.
It has now done 1.044.000.KM
Still not using any oil; nor has head been off.

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum but have been have been a Landi owner for 5 years now. Firstly had a FL1 and now a FL2. Got an issue with the FL2 (TD4 HST) and seeking some advise before heading to the garage and repair bill.

Got a whining noise that gets worse as the engine power increases over the duration of any journey (short or long). Wondered if it was something to do with the transmission/gearbox, but I've noticed that when I put the car in Neutral and rev the engine, the noise increases/decreases in line with the revs.

Some people have suggested it might be the turbo, but I've not noticed any loss of power, just the noise.

Garage have advised not to drive it and get it recovered to them.

Any ideas?

Two comments if I may;
.
First I would detach the auxiary drive belt and see if the noise stops. If stopped then it could be any of a long list , aircon pump, power steering pump, alternator, auxiliary belt pulley.

If it doesn't stop then yes it could be the Turbo.

Up here we have a company called Midland Turbo who are a service factory where they rebuild Turbos. (Its a big operation not a back street unit )

Your own turbo rebuilt will cost much less.
