How much is too much ??

Had a senior moment yesterday. rolled up at the garage fuel pumps when the light had just started showing on the FL2.. Brain in neutral I proceeded to squirt unleaded into the tank, got to thirty quids worth when I suddenly realised I was'nt filling the wife's Ford Focus..dohhhh.. Did'nt start it, just pushed it off the pumps and got my mate to tow me to his garage down the road. That was fun... without power steering or brakes.. Anyways No real harm done except to my pride and wallet. But was told that if I had'nt put too much petrol in I may have been able to fill up with diesel and would have been ok. Question is, how much is too much mixture petrol to diesel anyone know.? lucan400

just putting in the key will have primed the fuel pump, i believe

if you have drained it and filled to the brim with diesel and drive a little and refill often it should be ok as i have heard people have got away with it after driving and mixing diesel with a small amount of petrol

I once put about 1/4 tank of unleaded in mine, I brimmed it with diesel and added 500mls of 2stroke oil, that was 3 years ago, been working fine since though I do use 2stroke most of the time now but on a 20% basis.

I think years ago, they used 4star to 'winterise' diesel to stop it freezing, not sure of the ratio's they used.

I would imagine the engine would be ok, just need to make sure the fuel pump is lubed ok, after all, tank engines can run on just about any fuel and they are diesel (I know, before you all start avin a go, they are designed specially for that, but it shows the basic principle that they can do it)  MY2014 SD4 XS

£30 is nearly half a tank, bit to much to top it up for me. I would get some of it out, add a couple of litres of 2SO and top it up with Diesel.

Can you not lift the offside passenger seat, remove the fuel sender unit and syphon some out, remember its a saddle tank, so draining the offside saddle will still have a bit in the nearside saddle if the level was high enough or you put the Fob in the Dock Question Add some 2SO and refill.

Yes, we used to put a pint of petrol in with 20 gallons of diesel in the winter extremes but that was 30 years ago when the pumps could take a bit of abuse.

Sound like you have one third of a tank of unleaded. If it was me I would weigh up the difference between the cost and hassle of screwing up an engine against a couple of hundred quid to have a mobile service drain the tank for me. I'd have the tank drained.

I have read a few threads where this has been done and it prompted me to buy a Fuel Angel to stop this happening. For what it is, I think its expensive and fiddly but..........

Don't the newer ones have a trip device that locks off the filler and stops the nozzle going in and preventing fill with petrol? My sympathies for clearing it out if you have done it though. 12MY 61plate FL2 TD4 auto GS Orkney Grey Roof spoiler full size spare
