Coming home tonight, I pulled out from a junction turning left, pulling away fairly quickly to get into the traffic.

Martin.. That is exactly the sound I experienced too ..as if my drivers window or windscreen was hit ..very loud bang ..I was driving on city road no obstacles on road .. |

Yes, could be a brake shoe stuck on. I had the same on my Defender when the hand brake stuck on....one hell of a bang when it freed itself! John

Not wishing to worry you but I have just read the other thread where someone had this noise which was a rear driveshaft snapping...not good! John

my first thought was something like a drive shaft, but i assume you would feel a difference in how it drove afterwards |

Not necessarily Nick. You just lose the rear diff driving anything. You may notice in snow though! |

I had a driveshaft go once (admittedly on an old series 2) and it was exactly as you describe, pulling away from lights, massive bang from underneath. |
