Motorway speed limit to be cut to 60MPH

Looks like some motorways are going to have the speed limit cut to 60MPH to cut emissions. It wasn't long ago the government was looking into raising it to 80!!

Won't happen....

At this rate the vast majority of the country will be in London with pitch forks..... and for this reason alone it will not happen.

I read another article today saying that the proposal for the 80 limit had been dropped so that women would continue to vote for the conservatives. I believe that the EU regulations are playing a part in this proposal so maybe the government are trying to attract the green vote?

Either way I don't support it. But last few times I've been on a motorway the traffic has been bad that getting above 60 was a challenge!! Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

I live a couple of miles from Jct28 which is where that new limit will apparently start. I can remember when the Govt announced plans to widen the M1 past here which as a result meant they would need to make some adjustments to the A38 approach to Jct28.

This in turn saw a compulsory purchase of some houses in Pinxton that were on top of the bank above the A38 right up to Jct28. Of course, the home owner had no chance against the mighty Govt and so it was goodbye house.

Low and behold, the plans fell through and the widening never took place and the houses are still there. Too late for the homeowners who suffered stress and had to move out! LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Did you not hear that all 4x4s are getting banned from motorways and any owner of a 4x4 is getting issued with a push bike this is to balance out the extra emissions they have emitted 1995 P38 now dead

To drop the limit to 60mph does not make sense. The majority of motorway pollution is caused by trucks, which have a legal limit of 60mph already and are governed to 56mph anyway. It won't affect them. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Surely if you cut the speed to reduce pollution, you will be on the road for longer to get where you are going to. OK you will generate less pollution but for a longer time! so won't one cancel the other out?  MY2014 SD4 XS

Cutting the speed (and enforcing it with cameras) increases road capacity and smooths out hold-ups. That's why they do it on the M25 and on many of the German Autobahns at times of heavy traffic. I understand that traffic flow is the reason behind this proposal - nothing to do with our husky hugging "greenest Government ever".

It's 100kph (60mph) in and around Perth and urban areas, most probably due to more traffic about plus the fact they are very bad drivers here! 110kph in rural areas, which I still get a bit if a buzz when I this the road sign. Sad but true!

The UK are going about it the wrong way. The government should be more 'stealthy' about this change of speed idea... Implement something similar to the French system but make it 60mph when wet and 70mph when dry Whistle
