X (2000?) reg FL1 5 door manual diesel was and I loved it. Propshaft bearings every few months, 5 interior clocks, HDC switch wiring that couldn't make it to the next service, two clutches, center coupling failed taking out the rear diff and IRD. having to fit new tyres only to the rear because it emptied the rear diff of oil if you didn't. Engine that was as asthmatic but unbreakable and simple.
Handed it back after about 90k two years old and bought a Skoda because I couldn't afford to run a LR.
06 FL1 5 door auto chipped BMW diesel much better in every way than the first, took us to the sahara and back, to a quarry in Buxton every day for 18 months (Buxton in winter is fun), racked up similar miles to the first in 2-3 years, only things that I can remember failing were leaking roof, suspension bushes (after desert!), and some switches. The ability to select a gear (eg 2nd) and not have the car decide to chage gear irrespective of your wishes was not only nice it was nessesary.
FL2, crap steering (too light & fragile), masses of power, gearbox is smoother but worse in every other way, larger boot is good, spare wheel under all the tools in the boot is , miss the drop down rear window, second sunroof means the dog has nowhere to hide when it's sunny, so selecting parking spots is more of a problem. Sound system and satnav far far better. Still at 100k it's by far the most reliable if you discount the driver inflicted failures, not convinced of it's longevity, purely due to the abundance of electronics, and the stupidity of making gearbox and drive oils/filters inaccesible.
Still the best of the bunch, because of the power, ditching the viscous coupling, the power, moving the exhaust out of harms way, and the power. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner
