United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Lago Grey

Unless the cars are on similar tyres and driven in a similar manner tests like this prove little - tyres matter at least as much as the basic ability of the car, and driving style also makes a big difference.

Which is why I can't help being a bit sceptical about the test mentioned by Mav above. I have no knowledge of most of the cars referred to, but the X-Trail is pretty competent and whilst the 4WD Freelander is better I can't help thinking that under similar circumstances a 4WD X-Trail would have no problem keeping up with a 2WD Freelander. Maybe the Freelander was on more aggressive rubber to make up for the lack of 4WD?

The same applies to the FL/Kia video - the main impression I get is that the FL was on better tyres for the conditions. (Although I'm equally sure that on similar rubber the FL would still be better!)

Sirmik, your gonna hate me for this, but after watching the video, all it proves is the Kia driver is slightly worse re driving ability than the LR driver, nothing to do with a vehicle comparison IMHO.

No , I like you)) I'm the driver of LR2 , my friend is Kia driver
By the way, I was not trying to compare them..this video just for fun and to show what Freel can do with the tires for highways , not AT tires or MUD

Pls, pay attention (given in video) that FL2 uses NO AT tires in contrast to kia which uses AT tires

Ok, ok - I was watching the cars not the captions! Smile

How much wear on the ATs, just out of interest? In some of those shots they look more like slicks!

But with all that wheelspin it's hard to tell - this outing was clearly more about fun than testing the cars, so it's hard to draw conclusions.

Kia tires was bought in current season and we did not have a task to overcome this puddles by the most properly methods..it was just for fun , to cheer you up in such frowning days at least in my region:)

Take into account the weight of Mohave ,it's about 300-400 kg heavier than LR2

The abandoned test had all cars on factory tyres. Nothing to be sceptical about. On the real rough stuff, the Fl2 is far superior. The rest are lacking because they had to compromise to enable decent on road and off road performance.

Land a Rover products don't compromise which has a few issues elsewhere, like boot space etc. Fl2's is not as good as others. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

The Freely 1 & 2 have always been the best in their class Thumbs Up If you ever look at the car reviews for both vehicles they always complain and body roll in them Twisted Evil these idiotic presenters don't realise that it is a extremely capable machine off road and at times on roads mannerisms have to be compromised. Hopefully the future vehicles will have the same capabilities but I can see LR listening to these Censored people complaining about body role and as a result they will make them less capable of road Big Cry LR are already aware that only approx 10% of Freely's are taken off road regularly! MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

"Factory tyres" doesn't mean anything, though. What were they? Were they actually similar in capability?

And I think you underestimate the X-Trail. What you say may be true of most of the cars mentioned, but the X-Trail is pretty competent, which is why I restricted my comments to it alone. I stand by "I can't help thinking that under similar circumstances a 4WD X-Trail would have no problem keeping up with a 2WD Freelander"!

Well just a little more on how the ed4 copes off road.
Decided to take it down an old railway line. Full of ruts and some boggy areas.
I went along with a friend who has an old discovery with oversized AT tyres and another guy in his 4wd pathfinder. The ed4 coped much better than I expected. I did get stuck in sloppy mud twice but so did the pathfinder. I think this was down to the very slow pace of the lead disco. On the way back down the line I took the lead and made it back to the Tarmac with no dramas. The pathfinder managed to get bogged in twice on the way back.
I'm not saying the ed4 is better than most 4wd but it certainly got over terrain I would never dream of trying without the safety net of a friend with a winch. Oh and just a note my fl2 is running continental winter tyres not AT tyres.
