Whirling Noise

Anyone have any suggestions for a whirling noise that i am getting, sounds like its coming from passenger side front corner but perhaps the passenger rear corner (difficult to tell until i get a passenger in) More pronounced when letting the car coast or when going over 50mph. Thought it might be something to do with having a new rear tyre fitted but i have had two other tyres fitted earlier in the year with no similar problem - thinking the noise and the new tyre are coincident rather than related. Sound is like the sound a hoover makes when it is switched off and the motors winding to a stop.

Will try to call in LR or call LR Assist on Monday for advice. Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black

Went back to tyre fitter today who acknowledged the noise, took tyre off especting to see a mark on the inside of the wheel where something was rubbing but nothing, rechecked the tyre and pressures, refitted and noise still there - his opinion was it is diff related so a now awaiting LR Assist to arrive to investigate - happy days! lucky it has occurred whilst still under warranty. I get nervous about the size of bills for stuff like this now mine is out of warranty!

Rear differential pinion bearing at a guess.

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Baltic Blue

Hi there, not a FL owner at moment but soon to be , a 2008 GS, a bit worried about these diff problems. We have been LR Discovery owners for the last 10 years in which they have been off roaded at times and yes I have knackered a few diffs in my time but at £50-100 a second hand diff it's not too painful. This Freelander is coming with 12 months LR warranty so any problem I hope happens in the first 12 months. Must admit though previous LRs have been much older and with 200,000 miles plus on the clock so I am hoping for trouble free motoring and spending less money on maintenance

Cheers.

Well mine has just gone!

33K miles and out of warranty of course. £600+ the garage reckons.
However, the garage offered to put in a claim to Land Rover without any prompting. It must have had something to do with the look on my face....
Annoyingly they have no courtesy cars for a whole month!
Anyone know what sort of contribution Land Rover are likely to make?

Hopefully LR will pick up the whole cost - might be worth getting in touch with LR Customer Services yourself on here and getting them onside.

I dread to think what the bill would have been on mine if it had been out of warranty, what would a diff bearing, 2 haldex units, 1 aux tension belt, 1 oil diff pump and an oil leak cost? Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black

You had all that and you're still here?

Hi Shilen,

You have a higher tolerance than Land Rover componenets!

I'm not sure what to expect from Land Rover if they make a contribution. Ok the car is almost 4 years old, out of warranty but it has been serviced by the dealer from new and at only 33K miles I don't see who anyone could argue wear and tear or anything other than a faulty diff. I just hope it hasn't stressed the Haldex.

I'll get it fixed and see how Land Rover respond. If they get silly it'll be the end of my Land Rover owning years.

Stuart

The X3

I don't blame you. The current X3 seems much better than the original.
I haven't tried one but if I leave the Freelander world it might be what I look at next.
