Automatic box question

Forumees:

Being a novice auto gear box driver and trying to max the mpg, is it safe (mechanically) to knock the box into neutral while say coasting to a stop (traffic lights etc) and then returning it to drive whilst still moving - imagine the traffic starts moving etc. I do it quite a lot in my current manual car and it does make quite a difference MY14 SD4 HSE LUX, Colour - Santorini Black, Spare Alloy, Privacy Glass, Front & rear SS tread plates, Chrome arse, Official LR coat hanger!! <-- Going soon... Any offers?

On order - DS2 with pretty much everything on 👌

Hi - This is not how an automatic car is designed to be driven, so I would advise strongly against it.

Cheers

Thanks Andy. My instinct says it's not a good idea - I needed to quash my suspicion! MY14 SD4 HSE LUX, Colour - Santorini Black, Spare Alloy, Privacy Glass, Front & rear SS tread plates, Chrome arse, Official LR coat hanger!! <-- Going soon... Any offers?

Auto transmissions are designed to operate similarly to manual transmissions. If you are coasting with an automatic transmission, all you are doing is the same as when you coast with a manual transmission.

It cannot damage the box if the engine is running and your transmission pump is working. But the downside is: do not try to put it into D when in high speed, because that can burn your clutches gradually by making them slip when they are engaging at high speed.
And that will make a hole in your pocket.

Theoretically it cannot damage the box, but is better to follow the guidelines in your vehicle's manual for your own safety.

Ha! No probs. It's not the sort of thing you would want to be doing and get it wrong, say dropping into reverse while doing 40mph...

And you can't do it - at least on my MY2013, as you need to put the brake on in order to re-engage drive from neutral. It will go from drive to neutral, but not back.

Drive nice and smooth, with no harsh barking or accelerating and MPG will be better. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

I may be wrong but does the engine not reduce the fuel to practically zero when you take your foot off in say a downhill, I have seen my inst fuel go to something like 125 mpg on a long downhill stretch with my foot off when towing!  MY2014 SD4 XS

On a slightly different note, anyone used Bluefiin to enhance mpg? MY14 SD4 HSE LUX, Colour - Santorini Black, Spare Alloy, Privacy Glass, Front & rear SS tread plates, Chrome arse, Official LR coat hanger!! <-- Going soon... Any offers?

You just have to press the brake, not turn on the parking brake. Yuri

On my old car I did for six years and it does improve mpg under normal driving conditions. But drive it hard and it will use more fuel with Bluefin. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........
