High Level Lamp - Centre Brake Light - 5 Repairs

Up until now I'd decided not to post this, however, as I am now on my 5th high level lamp, I thought it was time to share as there is possibly an issue brewing.

Originally, I had a leaking rear high level brake light, which meant when washing the car, I also washed the inside of the rear screen and my boot liner...... Whistle Big Cry

Had this replaced twice only to find that the replacements filled themselves with screenwash from the inside by means of foam/bubbles/water and condensation. This was put down to the fact that they didn't replace the internal pipe and nozzle/jet.

Due to the above, I changed dealers to one nearer to work, they replaced the high level lamp, internal pipe and nozzle/jet, only to find that it was a faulty lamp unit and it leaked into itself when the car was washed.

Today I have been back for a 5th repair, they removed a unit from a forecourt vehicle and fitted this to my car using some sticky foam tape to act as the seal. Safe to say, all my work uniform and gym kit don't need washing now, just drying after coming through the storm on the way home!!!

To say I am annoyed is an understatement, 5 repairs between two dealers (so far) and something so simple is causing headaches for me and the frustrated service lads and ladies! Its costing me in fuel, the odd hour off work and luckily no damage to any gadgets that I usually have in the boot!

Some may say I am picky, but the car is a September 2013 registered and water in the unit is only going to turn green or affect electrics.

Mike @ Land Rover has been more than helpful and is still on the case.

I have a 2010 my and this weekend I have just experienced a leak whilst washing the car. At first I thought the door seal was leaking when I found water on the boot cover, then I noticed the water running down the rear window.

I have not done any investigating yet, but are these light units sealed with a rubber gasket or is it just sticky foam strip?  MY2014 SD4 XS

Hmm thanks for that.

Seems I may need to consider some form of sealant, maybe some Sugru!  MY2014 SD4 XS

This is the problem you see, because im under warranty, its better on my pocket to let them sort it.....however 5 replacements and a bag of wet work kit later i'm still no better off!

Sealant is a good idea.....however.....not sure how you would change a bulb if it was 'no more nailed' in!! Other than a tidy silicone bead around the outer edge?

Its quite a poor design really......and they know it! 2013 FL2 - Black Edition Auto

Just smear some sealant on the seal, your not "No Nailing" a shelf to a wall, you can gently pry it off easily, you only have to break the seal if you need to change a lamp, not that I had to with either of mine. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Knowing my luck (I have previous for this) I would break something in the process of pinging off the trim!

Yeh thats true Ad, if it was a 4 or 5 year old vehicle thats the first thing I would do. But its 3 months old and I dont want to mess! 2013 FL2 - Black Edition Auto

Yes, despite doing the silicone sealant repair myself a few months back, I have been greeted this morning with water in my boot coming in via the light. I cannot believe that Landrover STILL cannot make a car that is water tight Evil or Very Mad FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

High level brake leak...

2008 HSE, mine leaked, I took it apart to clean it all up thinking it would help, no joy, still leaked so out came the black stuff, ain't got time to keep messing, poor design, you would have thought they would have fixed it for later models though.

This is now sorted, it was a small 'O' ring seal that doesn't appear on the parts catalogue for the repair. All sorted, good as new......apart from them losing a trim clip in the boot double skin so it rattles now!! Doh!! 2013 FL2 - Black Edition Auto
