Tow Bar and Noseweight

Just fitted a Witter Tow bar with detachable Tow Ball. According to the specification on the box the Tow bar weighs 15.8kg and the Detachable Tow Ball weighs 5.5kg.

Does this extra weight of 21kg on the back of the car decrease the tow bar loading limit of 150kg for the Freely2?

Or has the manufacturer taken into consideration the towbar/ball weight when calculating the vehicle tow bar load limit?

No, it is fixed to the vehicle and is part of the vehicle payload. 150kgs is the Nose weight limit, it is the limit that LR have put on the vehicle should the vehicle be loaded to the Max plus towing also. If you was putting a Bike Rack loaded with a bike other two on, this would then have to come off your noseweight, it's the force you putting on the bar not the weight of the bar. Bearing in mind that loaded to the Max and towing you don't go over your GTW. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

According to the addendum in the 2012 owners handbook, the max noseweight is 150Kg on the ball + 100Kg, the extra 100Kg is deducted from payload as per the roof load. The main limiting factor being the rear axle gross loading Generally speaking this gives a more than generous tow bar loading, though the addendum doesn't state, one assumes the mounting for the bike rack would be specific, my car was an ex LR with a fixed swan neck and twin electrics already fitted. What's your tow bar rated at, most are rated at 100Kg max load anyway.

It is rated at 125kg, that is what it says on the detachable part of the tow ball. As my caravan max nose weight is rated at 100kg it is certainly up for the job, although I usually keep the caravan nose weight down to 85kg.

Perhaps the various types of tow bars have different ratings as to their capacity to take extra loading. The vehicle has a standard set noseweight, however depending on the tow bar this may increase or decrease, I would suspect a detachable could be rated less than the vehicle as the detachable part could be generic and there are not many vehicles with a 150Kg limit. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

The genuine LR Detachable is rated at 150kgs, makes no difference with the genuine towbars they are all rated at 150kgs fixed or detachable. All Land Rovers have a 150kg noseweight limit. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

So is there a difference on the genuine LR bars that allows the extra 100Kg and where is the attachment point? If the detachable part is only rated to 150Kg it can't be on that. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I don't know of any bar that someone has fitted to a Freelander that is rated less than 150kgs, it doesn't makes sense to have a lower rated towbar Confused

According to Witter the one they do is rated at 150kgs Confused p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

When I bought the Witter Detachable Swan neck Towbar I thought it was rated at 150kgs. However on the detachable tow ball it is written( Class A50 D=11,0kN S=125Kg) not sure what this means but at a guess the S value is the maximum nose weight.

According to Witter, the detachable swan neck is 150Kg on S value, I would take it back and get a 150Kg version as per the specification for the FL2. I would suspect the mounting for it is generic and there is a possibility you may have been supplied with the wrong detachable part. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I have the Witter R41AQ Tow Bar with the detachable neck option ZQ2037 which I now know is rated at 125Kg. Not too worried about the 125Kg rating as I would not load the towbar above this rating. In fact my caravan nose weight is 100Kg max and I usually only load it to up to 85Kg. My only concern now is this Tow Ball compatible with my caravans AL-KO AKS 3004 stabiliser Hitch.

I am surprised that Witter supply a Towball rated at 125kgs for a vehicle rated at 150kgs. Quite a few on here have the Witter Detachable but no one has ever mentioned it before, if it were me I would check it with Witter Question

The Towball will be fine with the Al Ko hitch though Thumbs Up p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

I have sent an email to Witter Sales and await with interest their reply. You maybe right about the wrong tow ball being supplied for the Freely2. If Witter confirm it to be wrong then I will get it changed.
