Our 2006 freelander 2 GS has had an inlet manifold flap break off go through the valve and wreck the piston it is fully serviced and only done 70000 miles the cost of the repairs is going to be £2600. just wondering if anyone else has had a problem like this or heard of it

I had the same problem , flaps broken and goes to the engine
big damage and more than 2000€ repair cost

my Freelander had 110.000 miles when it occurs
I decided to remove the 4 flaps , to avoid the same problem in the future,
and it work well without flaps (30.000 miles since the reparation)

That's bad luck, and very annoying.
I wasn't aware that the Mondeo engine had swirl flaps , but a bit of googling reveals that the geniuses at Land Rover were the first to use them on TDcI's! Mk3 models didn't have them but after the Freel2 the 2007 fat Mondeo's did.
Perhaps Land Rover dealers were worried that there wouldn't be enough warranty work if they didn't put a boobytrap in there somewhere.
Looking around on eBay etc there don't appear to be blanking kits available......yet.

Hmmm. So there's two in this post that have had this happen. Either it's a common fault or it's common that those that do have this happen to them start looking on the 'net and end up on this site. As both of those that have had this happen have only ever made the one post, I am hoping it's the latter and not the former. I've not had this problem yet, (touching wood furiously), and don't want it. If anyone is thinking of a group buy I'm in!

My 2007 (57) Freelander 2 with 137,000 miles has just suffered the same problem. Three out of four flaps were misplaced. One of the pins is missing. There is low compression on #2 cylinder, so now engine head to be removed for further investigation.

Can anybody confirm if a new replacement air intake manifold still has these butterfly flaps? I think on new vehicles they're gone, but not sure about the replacement part for older (2007) vehicles?

My advice, replace your air intake manifold if your mileage is 70 - 90K. Much cheaper (less than £150 for manifold l think) than repairing engine damage. I am expecting cost of repairs to be at least £2000...

am_in_o how did you remove the swirl flaps?

To put forward a different perspective - I used to run an E60 530d and the beemer forums were full of tales of woe of swirl flaps coming loose and being ingested by the engine with catastrophic results. The problem seemed to be so common that I felt compelled to take the inlet manifold off to check mine - which were all absolutely rock solid with no sign of becoming loose whatsoever. While putting the manifold back on, I managed to snap one of the bolts by over-torqueing it.

I'm not saying the problem doesn't occur - but forums are a magnet for people who do have faults...and it does present a somewhat distorted version of reality. 2010 Freelander 2 HSE Auto Santorini Black / Ebony Leather

For my MY2010 (for other reasons), I had to fit a replacement engine which was a 2011 specification.
The 2010 engine has flaps; the 2011 is without.

As part of the work I removed and handled both manifolds; they are identical mouldings and have moulded in part numbers for with and without.

On re-installation I refitted my 2010 manifold with flaps and regret the decision.

My intention is to change back to the newer manifold and blank the vacuum pipe that operates the flaps.
.
If only I knew how to remove the actuator and just rotate the flap shaft to fully open and fix it to no longer rotate.
.
My guess would be that it is EGR exhaust gooey crud that causes the failing and breakage; can anyone confirm this?
