How crazy is that on an "Off Road" vehicle.

I wouldn't call Freelander 2 an "Off Road" vehicle...

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

Wading depths for current models in static water:

All New Range Rover in offroad height 900mm
All New Range Rover Sport in offroad height 850mm
Discovery 4 in offroad height 700mm. onroad height 600mm
Freelander 2 500mm
Evoque 500mm
Defender 500mm

Took a Freelander 2 up to top of tyres last week and it was fine but so was the Evoque that followed me while the Defender did let a little water in through the doors.

Always check the depth before driving, if you're not prepared to walk it, find another way. Drive slowly through to minimise wash and damage to the environment but fast enough to not damage your vehicle.

All very well, but are starter motors and alternators water proof or at least water resistant? As water depths only refer to clam static water and bow waves often are higher.
