Anyone seen these before?

Hi folks,

I need to replace brake discs and pads all around and I'm thinking of going the drilled/grooved route (purely for looks). Saw a post on here about the M-Tec equivalent but wondering if anyone had come across these?

I wouldn't have thought you'd need drilled and grooved discs on a FL2 unless you intend doing a few track days in it. Mr. Green
I have heard that grooved discs are noisier than standard ones as well as wearing out pads quicker. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

Thanks for the replies folks. Didn't realise the standard LR ones would be that much cheaper? That price includes pads AND discs. Best place to buy the LR ones?? Thumbs Up

Because the traction control and ABS are setup to work with a specific brake efficiency.

Different pads have different coefficients of friction, so more agressive brakes are not always better. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

ABS and traction control work by sensors measuring the differences in rotational speeds of the road wheels. The coefficients of friction on any brake linings vary immensely due to temperature, whether they are wet or dry or the surfaces glazed or worn. Aftermaket discs and pads should have no effect on either system.

If the aftermarket parts are within LR tolerances then yes they should work as good as the originals.

After frying a set of aftermarket (Mintex from Halfords) pads in under 3 days, sailing through a junction, and destroying the original discs, I am of the opinion not all brake parts are equal. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

maybe this is an alternative?

You can use the brake disk from the petrol FL2 on the diesel as well, but I have not tested it..

are all the brakes the same size, I seem to remember someone saying that the later cars have bigger calipers or something and wouldnt fit into the smaller rims from the older models?

As far as I am aware the only change to size of brakes came in with the 2013MY and the EPB on the rear brakes meaning 16" wheels won't now fit a 2013MY model.

As to the petrol engine front discs, they are 16mm greater in diameter but the calliper and brake pads are the same - the carrier supplied moves the calliper and pads out to correctly line up with the bigger disc. Whether these would fit 16" wheels I am not sure - I do know that a well meaning tyre fitter put stick-on weights when balancing the wheels on my previous Freelander that had 16" rims but the weights snagged on the calliper as I drove off, scratching the paint on the inside as I went...

The advantage of the bigger discs despite the contact area being the same is leverage as the braking force is applied at a greater distance from the fulcrum (the wheel hub).

Hope that helps. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red
