We'll winter is almost on its way one thing that is alien to me is the snow traction system. How does it exactly work is it for loose deep snow only? Noticed it only fits 17" or 18" alloys so where does that put the rest of us with 19s, 20s or even 22s! Snow traction system is just a version of snow chains, you fit a special bracket to the wheel hub and then attach the traction system to the tyre via the bracket. The difference between the traction system and traditional snow chains is that the traction system is only on the tread part of the tyre and the outer wall rather than the inside as well. It is particularly useful on any vehicle with limited clearance on the inner side of the tyre such as Freelander 2 with wheels larger then 18 inches.

You can't fit a traction system to wheels over 18 inches but you might just get away with fitting snow socks but they are only for use in snow covered roads and will wear out very quickly on any other surface.

In winter those on 19's upwards should be looking to fit winter tyres for the best/safest performance, failing that fit a All Weather/All Season tyres but make sure you've got over 4mm tread depth or they will not perform to their best. At the end of the day in snow you've still only got 4 small areas of rubber in contact with the snow and the laws of physics will come into play if you drive too fast or aggressively.

Terrain Response and Traction Control will help but even they cannot defy the laws of physics.

If you can, you need to get yourself a half day or full day LR Experience where all your questions can be answered for you as you discover what a capable vehicle the Freelander is, even on summer tyres.

The land rover snow traction system is just the spikes spider sport in a landrover bag.

Its really only going to help on ice covered roads.

Winter tyres are the best first step. But the freelander is very capable on the standard tyres too.

Ahem … they do fit 19's and 20's Well mine do at least and I got them from my main dealer a while back.

They may well fit but according to the relevant section of the owners manual they shouldn't be fitted to wheels over 18"

Half chain traction devices can be fitted to the front wheels of vehicles fitted with 17 inch and 18 inch diameter wheels.

Before discovering snow tyres I used snow chains. Chains are a pain - they are awkward to get on/off - they need to be kept tensioned and if you drive them on black sections of tarmac they are very slippy and will wear out after only 100ish miles.
